Take as a sample tha Lake of Antermoia, nestled between the walls of the Catinaccio near the famous resort, is one of the most fascinating and photographed glacial lakes in the Dolomites. In front of such turquoise and crystal-clear water, the impulse to take a dip or cool off after the climb may seem like a harmless gesture.
However, there is a fundamental principle of the mountain that we must always keep in mind: in high-altitude lakes, bathing is not done
Even if done with absolute good faith, a dip in an icy lake alters an extremely fragile biological balance:
🧴 Creams and chemicals: Sunscreens, insect repellents, or even sweat and deodorant dissolve instantly in the water. In such a small basin, they alter the chemistry of the water and are toxic to the microorganisms that keep it alive and transparent.
🐸 Disturbance to alpine wildlife: At 2,500 meters, life swims at a slow pace. Moving the bottom or creating sudden waves destroys the habitats of amphibians and aquatic insects unique to these environments.
❄️ Lack of continuous replacement: Being a high-altitude icy lake, the water volume is reduced and the replacement is limited.
Small traces of pollution have an enormously amplified impact compared to a lake on the plain or the sea.
Going to a higher altitude means adapting to the pace of nature, learning to leave only footprints out of the water and to take away only memories, without altering what makes these places unique.
