BENGUELA PROVINCE SAMBO CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS OVER 150 ATHLETES IN ANGOLA

Angola's Benguela province hosted its provincial SAMBO Championship on August 21-22, bringing together more than 150 athletes across the cadet, junior, and senior categories.

“The competition took place before an enthusiastic crowd, with spectators showing tremendous support for athletes competing in sport SAMBO, combat SAMBO, and beach SAMBO,” the Angola (Luanda) Sambo and Kurash Association said in a statement.

The organization also added that the tournament served as a qualifier for the National Championship and gave a significant boost to the development of SAMBO both in the region and across the African continent.

António Gonçalves, president of the Benguela Province SAMBO Association, praised the athletes' high technical and competitive level, expressing confidence that the province's team can contend for the national title this year.

Francisco Kadima, president of Angola's National SAMBO Commission, highlighted the strong organization of the event and described the continuous growth of SAMBO in the country as a highly positive trend.

WORLD SAMBO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 REGULATIONS PUBLISHED

The International SAMBO Federation (FIAS) has published the regulations for the World SAMBO Championships 2026. The 50th anniversary tournament will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 6 to 8 November, with medals contested in Sport SAMBO, Combat SAMBO and Blind SAMBO among both men and women.

The Championships will be hosted at the Game Sports Arena in the Olympic Village and will bring together three disciplines:

Sport SAMBO
Men: 58, 64, 71, 79, 88, 98, +98 kg
Women: 50, 54, 59, 65, 72, 80, +80 kg

Combat SAMBO
Men: 58, 64, 71, 79, 88, 98, +98 kg
Women: 50, 54, 59, 65, 72, 80, +80 kg

Blind SAMBO (sport class SVI1)
Men: 64, 79, 98 kg
Women: 50, 59 kg

Sport SAMBO and Blind SAMBO will be contested using a group-stage format followed by knockout rounds, with repechage bouts for finalists. Combat SAMBO will follow a group-stage and knockout system without repechage. The team medal count will be conducted according to the Olympic principle.

Athlete registration is carried out exclusively through the FIAS Electronic System – FIAS Database. Each national delegation may include up to 33 athletes, five coaches, a doctor, a masseur and a head of delegation.

A separate requirement applies to athletes with visual impairment: national federations must submit a completed medical diagnostic form no later than 10 October, with classification of the athletes taking place on the eve of the tournament.

Completing an anti-doping education course remains a mandatory condition for accreditation – either ADEL, a national anti-doping organization's course, or an ITA webinar series certificate. Certificates must have been obtained no earlier than 1 August 2024 and submitted to FIAS by 4 November; athletes without this document will not be accredited for the Championships.

CLEAN SPORT STARTS WITH KNOWLEDGE: FIAS TO HOST ANTI-DOPING WEBINAR

What does an athlete need to know to stay on the right side of the rules – even unintentionally? On 23 September, the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), together with the International Testing Agency (ITA), will host the Clean Sport Education Webinar, giving athletes the chance to get answers to their key anti-doping questions straight from the source.

The event is aimed at elite-level athletes and designed to help them understand how the anti-doping system works. As the organizers point out, knowing the rules – and understanding how they apply in practice – is essential for staying within them and protecting one's integrity.

During the webinar, participants will receive key information on anti-doping and work through practical scenarios to help them make informed decisions with confidence. A dedicated segment will be set aside for a live Q&A session, and athletes are encouraged to prepare their questions in advance.

The webinar will be delivered in English, with simultaneous translation into French, Spanish and Russian, as well as automated captions. All participants will receive a PDF of the presentation, including links to the resources covered.
