NWT Softball July Roundup

July was another incredible month on diamonds across the Northwest Territories! From our youngest athletes to our veteran players, it’s been amazing to see our softball community thriving.

👏 Minor Ball wrapped up another fantastic season. Congratulations to all of the players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and families who made this summer one to remember!

🚓 A huge shoutout to the Inuvik RCMP for volunteering their time on the diamonds and supporting local ball. Community partnerships like these make a big difference.

🔥 Congratulations to the Fire Prevention Prospects, who captured this year’s Fastball Territorial Championship! Well deserved after an outstanding tournament.

Slo-pitch leagues across the North are still in full swing, with teams continuing to enjoy great competition and plenty of summer evenings at the ballpark.

🥎The Yellowknife Merchants Fastball welcomed teams to Tommy Forrest Ballpark for the ISC Qualifier Northwestern Invitational Championship. Packed stands, incredible competition, and an electric atmosphere made for a memorable weekend of softball! Missed the action? Check out their Facebook!

Looking Ahead to August:

While summer always seems to fly by, there’s still plenty of ball left to play!

📍 Hay River hosts the Sunset Shaker Slo-Pitch Tournament.
📍 Northern teams will be travelling south to compete at Co-ed Nationals in Leduc
📍 The Merchants are back on the road, heading to Saskatoon beginning August 22 for the Canadian Senior A Men’s Nationals team.

Let’s make the most of the final month of our northern softball season! If your team has highlights, tournament results, or photos to share, tag so we can celebrate everything happening on diamonds across the North.

We’ve always said blue looks good on the ball diamond!

A huge shoutout to the members of the Inuvik RCMP Detachment who are spending two nights a week this summer coaching local softball teams.

Giving their time, sharing the game and building connections with youth in their community, this is what growing softball in the North looks like.

From one team in blue to another.. Let’s Play Ball 🥎

NWT Softball proudly celebrates one of our own, Paul Gard, on his induction into the Sport North Hall of Fame.

For decades, Paul has been a player, coach, mentor, builder, and leader within softball in the Northwest Territories. From competing at national championships in the 1970s and 80s, to representing the North internationally at World Masters Games, his accomplishments on the field are remarkable but his impact off the field may be even greater.

Paul helped build a culture of northern softball rooted in pride, friendship, competition, and community. The relationships built on the diamonds of Yellowknife carried through generations, creating lifelong teammates, friendships, and families connected through the game.

His passion for softball helped inspire countless athletes across the North.

Thank you, Paul, for everything you have given to the game, the community, and the Northwest Territories.

Thank you to Sport North for hosting such a great night!

From early mornings to late nights at the ball diamonds, softball and slo-pitch in the NWT has always been built by strong women. 💙🥎

The women coaching, scorekeeping, fundraising, cheering, organizing, and still stepping on the field themselves.

This game means more because of you.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms across the softball and slo-pitch diamonds.

The season is officially underway for one of our northern competitive teams and they’re already setting the tone.

Congratulations to the Saints Women's Slo-pitch team for going BACK-TO-BACK GOLD at the May Open in Leduc! 🥇

SAINTS WIN. SAINTS WIN. 🔥

Five games. No shortcuts. Just grit.

After battling our way back to the finals, the Saints came ALIVE in the top of the seventh, putting up 9 runs to go ahead 21–13 and then slammed the door shut with LOCKDOWN defense against the Sirens.

This one?
A true team win.

Here’s what went down:

🔥 Kim, Alexis & Heather: MULTIPLE in-the-park home runs

🔥 Shandie & Dee: lights out on the mound AND at the plate

🔥 Chellie:climbed the ladder for a huge grab and crucial hits

🔥 Lou & Vanessa: steady, reliable, shutting it down in the outfield and getting it done at the plate

🔥 Theresa: game-changing hits and absolute darts from 3rd

🔥 Tehnille: clutch double plays and RBI hits when it mattered

🔥 Dana: base-clearing hits and big-time plays at 1st

🔥 Kelly: coming up with BIG outs when we needed them most

🔥 Zach: holding it down on the bench and coaching at 3rd

We didn’t just win,
we earned every single inning of it.

Shout out to our teammates (we missed you this weekend) and to our fans who were watching the livestream and cheering us on.💙💛

Thank you to Jaime Stodgell Scott Carefoot Brent Anderson and the crew for running such a great weekend.
