The kettlebell halo is one of the best drills for shoulder mobility and core stability, but allowing your hips to twist or keeping the bell floating too high robs you of tension.

In our Kettlebell Strength class, Ryan breaks down the key cues to keep the pelvis locked forward and get maximum work out of your lats, upper back, and shoulders.

Key benefits of the Kettlebell Halo:

Shoulder Mobility & Rotator Cuff Health: Carves out full 360-degree range of motion around the head while building resilience in the shoulder girdle.

Anti-Rotational Core Strength: Moving a load dynamically around the torso forces your abs and obliques to fight unwanted twisting and hyperextension.

Lat & Upper Back Engagement: Pulling the bell down actively into the rack builds back tension that carries directly into pullovers, presses, and carries.

Coaching cues from Ryan to lock it in:

Lock the Hips Forward: Keep your pelvis squared up—resist the urge to pivot or twist as the bell circles around.

Pull Down & Reset: Don’t let the bell stay hovering high. Pull it firmly down in front of your chest so your elbows stack directly over your hips between reps.

Push & Pull Mechanics: Use an active push-and-pull rhythm through the shoulders and back to control the arc in both directions.

A powerful, safe kettlebell swing doesn't start with the hips—it starts with the setup before the bell even leaves the floor.

In our Kettlebell Fundamentals class, DJ breaks down the exact sequence required to build full-body tension, root into the ground, and create a weightless float at the top.

The Kettlebell Swing Setup Sequence:

Set Your Distance & Stance: Find your foot width and optimal spacing behind the bell.

Brace & Hinge: Lock in the core first, then hinge deep into the hips.

Tilt the Bell: Angle the bell back at 45 degrees toward your center of mass.

"Break the Handle": Engage the lats and pack the shoulders tight.

Root the Feet: Actively drive your toes and feet into the floor to lock joint angles.

Breathe & Hike: Take a sharp breath in, hike back deep, and let the hips drive the float.

Key benefits of the kettlebell swing:
✅ Explosive Posterior Chain Power: Builds massive hip-snap drive through the glutes and hamstrings

✅ Cardiovascular & Work Capacity: Delivers high-output conditioning with zero impact on the joints

✅ Core Rigidity & Spine Protection: Trains dynamic bracing and anti-extension under ballistic loads

The top of a kettlebell swing isn’t a relaxed standing position—it’s an upright, high-tension standing plank.

In our Kettlebell Fundamentals class, DJ breaks down a simple wall drill that teaches your body exactly how much full-body stiffness, bracing, and alignment you need before adding ballistic load.

Why the Wall Plank Drill works:

Crown-to-Tailbone Alignment: Flat contact against the wall (head, mid-back, and sacrum) forces you to brace your core and tuck the pelvis without arching your lower back.

Dialing in Tension: Teaches you to actively fire your glutes, brace your abs, and pack your upper back simultaneously.

Range-of-Motion Feedback: Raising the arms until the back wants to leave the wall immediately shows you where your overhead or shoulder mobility limits lie.

Key benefits for your kettlebell swing:
✅ Eliminates Lower Back Strain: Prevents hyper-extending or leaning back at the top of the swing

✅ Maximizes Power Transfer: A rock-solid lockout ensures all hip drive goes directly into floating the bell

✅ Builds Body Awareness: Translates static tension straight into dynamic, ballistic movements

The most important part of a strong kettlebell hike pass isn't what moves—it’s what stays locked in place.

In our Kettlebell Fundamentals class, DJ breaks down the "invisible" step in the setup that creates the foundation for a powerful, explosive swing: actively driving into the floor.

Why the "Push Down" cue changes everything:

Locks Joint Angles: Actively pushing your feet down into the ground keeps your knee and hip angles completely fixed as the bell travels back.

Prevents Center-of-Mass Shift: When the weight swings back between your legs, driving through the floor stops your body from tipping or collapsing backward.

Builds Unmatched Tension: Creates a solid, spring-loaded posterior chain ready to snap out of the bottom position with maximum power.

Key benefits of the kettlebell hike pass drill:
✅ Hinged Tension Control: Teaches you how to load the hamstrings and glutes safely before adding ballistic speed

✅ Lat & Shoulder Pack: Trains active lat engagement to pull the bell without rounding the upper back

✅ Swing Foundation: Instills the exact timing, bracing, and root stability needed for heavy single and double swings

A powerful kettlebell swing doesn’t start in mid-air—it starts with the hike.

In our Kettlebell Fundamentals course, DJ breaks down the exact 6-step setup method we teach to dial in tension, posture, and power before the bell ever moves:

Step 1: Stand behind the bell relaxed. Your baseline reset point.

Step 2: Approach the bell. Dial in foot width and your heel-to-toe distance from the bell.

Step 3: Hinge & brace. Lock in that core tension from the bridge drill and hinge deep into the hips.

Step 4: Tilt the bell & pack the lats. Angle the bell back toward you, pull shoulders away from ears, and turn elbow creases forward.

Step 5: Root the feet. Drive toes into the floor for total ground connection.

Step 6: Inhale & hike. Pull the bell back while keeping knee and ankle angles locked—no rising up early.

Dial in the setup, and the swing takes care of itself.

A solid kettlebell swing is taugh by teaching the body what maximum tension feels like. 🦁

Using a yoga block during glute bridges forces three critical elements:
✅ Adductor engagement: Squeezing the block locks in the hips.
✅ Full hip extension: Glutes fire completely at the top.
✅ Core bracing: Protects the low back and stabilizes the lockout.

That exact stiffness you create at the top of the bridge is the exact feeling you want at the top of your swing and during your hike.

Try 2 sets of 5 reps with a 2–3 second squeeze at the top during your next warm-up!

If you struggle to feel full glute lock-out, core brace, and adductor tension at the top of your swing, take it to the floor first.

DJ breaks down how the yoga block bridge teaches you to create total body stiffness before you ever hike the bell.

The Setup: Place a yoga block (or ball) between your knees.

The Action: Squeeze the block to activate your adductors, drive through the heels, extend the hips, and lock your core down.

The Goal: That exact tension at the top of the bridge is what your swing lockout should feel like every single rep.

If you can’t reach the turf during a kettlebell windmill, letting your bottom arm dangle in mid-air kills your stability and puts unnecessary strain on your spine and shoulder.

In our Kettlebell Strength class, Ryan shares a simple cue that fixes this instantly: anchor down to a yoga block.

Why this adjustment works:

Creates a Solid Anchor: Gives your bottom hand a stable base to push against, making it easier to engage your core and drive out of the bottom position.

Protects the Overhead Shoulder: When your base is secure, your packed overhead shoulder won't fight wobbles or drift out of alignment.

Builds Progressive Range of Motion: Meets your current hip and hamstring mobility where it’s at without forcing you to round your back just to touch the floor.

The big benefits of the Kettlebell Windmill:
✅ Bulletproof Shoulder Stability: Forces the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers to lock in under dynamic movement

✅ Multi-Planar Core Strength: Heavily trains the obliques, QL, and deep stabilizers to control torso rotation

✅ Hip & Hamstring Mobility: Builds active flexibility and strength through a deep lateral hinge

The kettlebell windmill is one of the most complete multi-planar movements you can train, bridging raw strength with active mobility.

In our Kettlebell Strength class, Ryan breaks down the exact mechanics needed to load the hips and lock in the overhead shoulder without compromising your spine.

Why the kettlebell windmill is elite:

Bulletproof Shoulder Stability: Forces the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers to pack and hold an overhead load through dynamic torso rotation.

Deep Hip & Hamstring Mobility: Demands a pure lateral hinge, opening up the posterior chain and groin under controlled tension.

Anti-Rotational & Oblique Strength: Challenges your deep core stabilizers to support and rotate the torso safely under load.

Coaching cues from Ryan to lock it in:

Square Up & Hinge: Start square and initiate the movement by hinging deep into the loaded hip rather than simply bending sideways.

Pack the Shoulder: Keep the overhead arm vertically stacked and actively packed tight into the joint socket throughout the descent.

Anchor the Bottom Hand: Aim for a flat hand on the floor or use yoga blocks—never leave the bottom arm floating loosely without a solid anchor point.

Drive Back to Tall: Hold the bottom position, push firmly through the floor and hand, and thrust the hips forward to return squarely to standing.
