Working on picking up rims off the wall on the forehand and backhand. U11 girls are making it look easy!
At the youth age, coaches should break down certain aspects of the game and work on the fine skills that players will use in the game. In hockey, there is a ton of board play. This is one skill that can be worked on in season!

Face-offs, what are you doing off the draw? Things to think of..
Centres - what hand is the opponent you’re facing off with? Where are you winning it to? Are you tying up instead of winning the draw and having support come through for loose pucks? Communication with your teammates will help with puck possession or retrieval!
Wingers - jumping on pucks quickly, finding shooting lanes through traffic once you get the puck, if the draw is lost what’s your role?

D gap control, pivots, and transitions
Key things to focus on:
- Stick position
- Body Position
- Matching forwards speed
- Closing the gap early
- Inside shoulder protects the middle of the ice
My why.
Whether you work with me in the spring, summer, or fall/winter, every time I step on the ice my goal is the same: to help you become the best version of yourself—both as a player and as a person.
And even if we’ve never shared the ice together, I hope you can still learn something from the content I post. If one drill, one mindset shift, or one piece of advice helps you improve or gives you confidence, then it’s worth it.
Helping athletes grow is why I do what I do. I am beyond passionate in helping every single player love the game even more by providing more confidence and fun to their game!

Some reunions just make your day! This morning I had a semi-private session with Hayls and Mo, and right before we got started, Ella and Goertz came running over to say hi as they were at the rink to coach NAHC. It was the quick reunion we all needed!
I honestly feel so lucky to have watched these four grow up over the years. From little girls stepping on the ice to incredible young women chasing their dreams. They’re all talented athletes (like beyond talented), but what stands out even more is the kind of people they’ve become. Kind. Humble. Hardworking. Respectful. The type of people who make everyone around them better.
Thank you, girls, for letting me be a small part of your journeys. Coaching you has been one of the greatest privileges, and you’ve all made me a better coach!
From left to right:
Hayley McDonald - Hayls is heading into her 1st year to play NCAA D1 at Ohio State, and will be studying Sports Psych/Kinesiology. Hayls also was the Captain of Team Canada for 2026 U18 Women’s Worlds.
Ella Stewner - Ella will be perusing her passion and got accepted into Dentistry School at U of M, which is incredibly competitive and hard to get into! She will be starting in a few short weeks.
Dana Goertzen - Goertz is heading into her 5th and final year as the Captain of U of M Bisons, and will be completing a Bachelor of Arts degree!
Morgan Smith - Mo is heading into her 3rd year at NCAA D1 Bemidji State, and will be an alternate Captain for the second year! She is studying Business Management (and is an all American scholar)
Proud of you girls!
Shout out to the rink lighting for making this pic crisp 😍
Zone entries continued.
This session we started off with 1 player zone entry options, followed by 2 player options, then progressed to 3 player zone entry’s. These clips are just a snippet of what was worked on.
The more options you know, the more creative you will be in a game, allowing you to be more of an offensive threat!
D blue line walks and shooting with and without pressure. Working on adding deception and reading the pressure infront of them for good shot selection
Working on deception with a jab step, off look pass for a shot on net (or fake pass into a shot).
Well done girls! 👏
