Our sunflowers are filling out under these beautiful skies, getting closer to becoming the birdseed your backyard birds love 🌻

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

These woodpeckers are best known for drilling neat rows of tiny holes in trees to feed on the sap. They’ll also eat insects, berries and occasionally stop by feeders.

The bright red throat on this one tells us it’s a male. Keep an eye out for them around your yard—you may even spot their distinctive rows of sap wells on nearby trees!

Hooray, it’s the long weekend!

Mourning Doves

Known for their soft, mournful cooing, these peaceful birds also make a unique whistling sound with their wings when they take off. That whistle isn’t a call—it’s created by air rushing through their wing feathers as they take flight. You will often find them under the feeders foraging for seeds other birds threw away.

The field is now in full flower and should stay this way for another couple of weeks. As the petals begin to fall, the sunflower seeds will continue to fill and mature until they’re ready for harvest.

Our resident Gray Catbirds are frequent visitors to the jelly feeder, especially during summer. Grape jelly provides a quick source of energy, and you’ll often spot these curious birds stopping by for a sweet treat before heading back into the shrubs.

Our very first sunflower has opened, and it’s just the beginning! With hundreds more buds getting ready, the fields will become more beautiful every day over the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Indigo Bunting 💙

The Indigo Bunting is one of Manitoba’s most breathtaking summer visitors. Seeing that brilliant blue flash through your yard is always a special treat!

If you’re hoping to attract one, offer a quality wild bird seed mix, fresh clean water, and plenty of nearby trees or shrubs where they can perch and feel safe.

With the hot weather we’ve been having, don’t forget to keep fresh water available at your feeders. Birds rely on it for both drinking and bathing, and it can make a big difference during these warm stretches.
