Easy now, old friend, lay still, lay calm,
The battle's roar fades, the air turns warm.
Your breath is shallow, your eyes grow dim,
But I am here - I'm with you, Jim.
You carried me through fire and fear,
Through fields of mud, through skies unclear.
When bullets flew and the ground did quake,
You held your ground for my own sake.
I know it hurts, I see the pain,
But soon, old boy, you’ll be free again.
No more harness, no more fight,
Only peace in endless night.
Remember the days we raced through the sun,
When war was far and life was fun?
I see you now, in meadows wide,
Galloping free, no need to hide.
I wish I could mend your broken frame,
But war takes all - it’s cruel, it’s plain.
So rest, dear Jim, your work is done,
The battle's lost, but you have won.
Your courage stays, though you depart,
You gave your strength, you gave your heart.
And as you close your gentle eyes,
Know that a hero never dies.
Goodbye, old friend, you've earned your rest,
A soldier’s steed, you gave your best.
I'll carry your spirit, where'er I roam -
For now, go on... gallop home.
Edit: I’m deeply moved by the overwhelming engagement on my post honoring veterans and the horses that stood by their side in battle. Your support, stories, and reflections mean more than words can express. Thank you for joining me in remembering their courage and sacrifice. I’m humbled and grateful for this shared tribute. If you could take the time to like or follow my page it would mean the world to me!

The Winter Star
Beneath the soft and falling snow,
Where northern winds gently blow,
A white horse stands in the quiet glen,
A timeless tale whispered again.
His coat, as pure as morning frost,
Gleams like moonlight, bright and lost.
With eyes like pools of twilight deep,
He guards the world as it dreams and sleeps.
A wreath of holly crowns his mane,
Red berries shining through the plain.
The bells he wears chime soft and clear,
A melody of Christmas cheer.
Through snowy fields and evergreen,
He moves like magic, soft, unseen.
Each hoofprint holds a spark of light,
A gift for hearts on Christmas night.
The children say he pulls a sleigh,
Guiding Santa along the way.
But others whisper he’s a star,
Come down to earth from realms afar.
In his gaze, a peace profound,
A silent joy that knows no bounds.
For in his presence, all can see,
The spirit of love, pure and free.
So if you wander Christmas Eve,
And in the snow, strange tracks perceive,
Look to the sky, where wonders play—
The white horse leads the holiday.

Gentle Giant Sea Horses
During the months of February through May, and again in September through November, the "Paardenvissers" or fishermen on horseback from Oostduinkerke, Belgium have taken their Belgian (Brabant or Brabançon) horses, planks and nets into the breast-deep water of the North Sea trolling for shrimp since the 17th Century.
Sturdy and steady and willing to work is the name of the game when chosing a horse to perform the task while the tide is out.
The skill of this method of fishing is handed down from father to son through the generations, and there are only a few left continuing in this tradition.

To the memory of silent footsteps
That beside us once did fall
We pause but for a moment
And in reverence do recall
For the hand that held the leash
They served our country well
Therefore we who do remain
Will their stories ever tell.
Some did come home
Along with us, tails held high
While others left empty collars
And in foreign soil now silently they lie
They are forever our guardian angels
Clad in soft and coloured fur
As present now in our hearts
As they ever and always were.
