Happy International Cat Day! 🐈⬛
Long before they became internet celebrities, cats were essential members of a ship's crew.
Their most important job? Keeping rats and mice under control. Rodents threatened food supplies, chewed through ropes, sails, and wooden structures, and carried diseases that could spread quickly in the close quarters of a ship.
But ship's cats offered more than pest control. During long voyages, they provided companionship to sailors far from home and were often considered lucky charms. Many believed cats could sense changing weather, helping crews prepare for rough seas.
Pictured here is Josephine, the beloved ship's cat aboard HMCS Nenamook, photographed sometime between 1939 and 1945.
Do you have a favourite famous ship's cat or a seafaring feline of your own? Share them in the comments!
