A Coal Harbour client came to me two years ago after a shoulder surgery that had left him afraid to lift anything overhead. His surgeon had cleared him. His physio had signed off. But nobody had taught him how to train again.

We spent the first month rebuilding movement patterns. Hip hinges, horizontal pressing, rotator cuff activation, tempo work. Nothing impressive on paper. Everything important in practice.

By month three he was pressing again with zero pain. By month six he was deadlifting more than he ever had before his injury.

That is what a personal trainer in Vancouver should do. Not just count reps. Build the foundation that makes every rep worth counting.

I have been coaching professionals in Coal Harbour, Yaletown, Gastown, Downtown Vancouver, and across the city for over 20 years. If you are coming back from an injury or just starting out, I would love to talk through where you are at.

Looking for the best personal trainer in Vancouver for someone over 35 who is serious about results?

Here is what I offer at Train Like Rob: 1 on 1 personal training built around your life, not a template. Every program starts with a movement screen. Every session is designed with your history, your goals, and your schedule in mind. And I am reachable between sessions, not just during them.

I train clients at Evolve Strength, 658 Homer St in Downtown Vancouver. That puts me minutes from Coal Harbour, Yaletown, Gastown, the West End, and Kitsilano. If you live or work anywhere in the Downtown Vancouver core, you are close.

My clients are typically busy professionals between 35 and 65. They have tried gyms before. Some have worked with other personal trainers in Vancouver. The common thread is that nothing stuck until the program was actually built around them.

I also offer online personal training for Vancouver clients who prefer to train remotely, and virtual personal training options for those outside the city.

No long term contracts. No upsells. Just personal training in Vancouver that is built to last.

If you are searching for a personal trainer in Downtown Vancouver and you keep finding the same generic options, it is worth knowing what actually separates a great trainer from an average one.

It is not the gym they work out in. It is not how many Instagram posts they have. It is whether they assess how you move before they put you under a bar.

I am Rob Moal, and I have been a personal trainer in Vancouver for over 20 years. Every new client I take on at Evolve Strength in Downtown Vancouver starts with a full movement screen. That is not a sales tactic. It is how you avoid getting hurt in the first month.

I work with professionals 35 and older across Coal Harbour, Yaletown, Gastown, the West End, Kitsilano, and the Beach District. If you have been dealing with chronic tightness, an old injury that never fully healed, or you just have no idea where to start, that movement screen is the most valuable hour you will spend.

Strength training in Vancouver should not mean copying what you see on YouTube and hoping for the best. It should mean having a program built around how your body actually moves.

Yaletown: Evolve Strength is a 10-minute walk

If you work in Yaletown and you've been thinking about hiring a personal trainer in Vancouver, Evolve Strength is a 10-minute walk.

I train professionals 35 and older at 658 Homer St in Downtown Vancouver. Before your first session we run a full movement screen. Then I build your program around your goals, your schedule, and your training history.

The clients I work with are serious about their health. They just need a trainer who's equally serious about building something that lasts.

The real goals my clients are chasing

The professionals I train at Evolve Strength in Downtown Vancouver aren't chasing a number on a scale. They want to feel strong when they walk into a room. They want to carry luggage without their shoulder flaring up. They want to hike with their kids without needing three days to recover.

Those are performance goals. And the training that builds toward them is the same training that changes how you look in the process.

Strength and function first. Everything else follows.

Losing fat after 40 requires a different approach

Losing fat after 40 requires a different approach than it did at 25. The hormonal environment has shifted. Stress is higher. Sleep is often worse. Recovery takes longer.

Aggressive caloric restriction and high-volume cardio are a recipe for muscle loss and burnout, not sustainable fat loss.

What actually works is building muscle, managing recovery, keeping protein high, and training in a way your body can respond to without breaking down. I've spent 20 years refining this approach with professionals in Downtown Vancouver.

The best thing you can do for your joints as you age

One of the best things you can do for your joints as you age is build the muscle around them.

Strong quads protect the knee. A strong posterior chain protects the lower back. Rotator cuff strength and scapular stability protect the shoulder. This isn't complicated but it requires intentional programming โ€” not just lifting heavy things and hoping for the best.

I work with professionals in Downtown Vancouver who want to be strong and durable for the long haul. 20+ years at Evolve Strength, 658 Homer St.

Knee pain doesn't mean stop training

Knee pain doesn't mean stop training. It usually means the training needs to change.

In most cases I see with personal training clients in Vancouver over 40, the knee pain traces back to one of two things: not enough quad strength relative to demand, or too much compression from tight hips and a restricted ankle. Sometimes both.

The fix isn't rest. It's targeted loading that rebuilds the strength and mobility the knee needs to handle the forces being put through it.

I've worked through this with clients for 20+ years at Evolve Strength in Downtown Vancouver.

How to actually fix chronic shoulder issues

Shoulder issues are almost as common as back pain in professionals over 40 โ€” and usually for the same reason. Years of sitting, typing, and loading a body that's gotten progressively tighter in the wrong places.

Before I put any overhead work into a client's program I want to see how the shoulder moves, how the thoracic spine rotates, and whether there's enough stability in the scapula to support what we're asking it to do.

That's not overly cautious. That's just what it takes to train the shoulder sustainably over years. I train at Evolve Strength, 658 Homer St in Downtown Vancouver.

Lower back pain is almost never a back problem

Lower back pain is the most common complaint I hear from new personal training clients in Vancouver. And in almost every case, the back isn't actually the problem.

It's a symptom. Usually of restricted hips, a stiff thoracic spine, or glutes that stopped firing somewhere along the way. The back is working overtime to compensate for what isn't doing its job.

I don't treat pain. But I do build programs that address the underlying movement problems driving it. Most clients feel a difference within a few weeks.
