Why you’re not shifty! Shifty defined: Shifty is the physical ability to rapidly change speed, direction, body position, and rhythm while maintaining balance, coordination, and control.

Here’s how I progress calf training:
1. Isotonics (traditional strength training)
* Progress from bilateral to unilateral exercises using basic progressive overload principles.
2. Isometrics
* Yielding isometrics: Hold for 30–45 seconds, gradually increasing intensity and volume over several weeks.
* Switching isometrics: A great way to overload the yielding stimulus and increase tendon demands.
* Pushing isometrics: Once isometric strength is established, the goal shifts to improving neuromuscular drive and motor unit recruitment.
3. Ballistics
* Ballistic isometrics are one of my favourite methods for reducing the amortization phase and improving stiffness and reactivity.
4. Plyometrics
* Plyometrics are an essential part of the progression. Similar to strength training, they should be progressively overloaded, but instead of adding weight, we manipulate jumping and hopping drills to improve coordination and reduce ground contact time.
* Progress from extensive to intensive plyometrics.
This isn’t just muscle training—it’s brain training as well.
It’s also important to note that I’ve presented these as a linear progression for simplicity. In practice, these qualities can often be trained concurrently, particularly the plyometric work.
