The Five Winds off-season adventures continue. Six members departed from Nine Mile Lake and followed the Gibson River downstream as far as Portage Bend, then looped back via a grueling bug-infested portage over Mike's High Point and through the Canal. 33 km made for a solid day's work. An unforecast rainstorm in the morning transformed the river into a lush, tropical jungle and infused life into the drying rapids. Rain gave way to clearing skies and glorious sunshine in the afternoon and evening.
We have more areas that we want to get to exploring this year so keep your eyes on the Google Group for more exciting day trips coming your way.

Five Winds shenanigans in the off season!! Even in the summer, the spirit of adventure is alive and well as we travel off the beaten path and bushwack our way toward new discoveries in hidden places. The great thing about the club is being able to meet such like-minded people to go on trips together. Don't know who to go with? Send a message to the Google Group to connect with other members.

Awesome "new" waterfall! One of the ponds off Fox Trail burst its beaverdams, and an unprecedented flow drained over the cliff at the beginning of Fox near the Lovering Bridge. Usually there is just a tiny drip over the cliff this time of year. In fact, this is 3 to 4 times the usual spring flow.
MUSKOKA IN FULL FLOOD. After visiting this area on skis three weekends ago, I saw how high the river had gotten now and knew that I had to come back, this time on foot, to document the spectacle. It's hard to believe that this is Ontario! The entire flow of the Muskoka Lakes, swollen by this year's flood conditions, comes roaring down the Moon River at 285 cubic meters per second. At this level, the entire outflow below the falls becomes a whirlpool of MONSTROUS proportions - truly a sight to behold. Based on historical data, this is the third-highest level the Moon River has ever reached within the past 60 years.

Well, the season looks very much done and the AGM is just around the corner on April 29th (save the date!). We just wanted to take this time to thank all our new members and guests who came out to ski or snowshoe with us and contribute to this record breaking season. And if we didn't manage to get a picture of you, well, you'll just have to come on another trip to give us a second chance!
Four adventurous club members decided to extend the season by carpool and ski to the Moon River last Sunday. Look what awaited us there! This has always been a scenic area, but the spring melt roaring through the falls and the earth emerging from under her winter blanket of snow made it feel extra special.
