جب دنیا کہتی تھی: پاکستان کو پہلی فتح کے لیے دہائیاں لگیں گی

1952 میں جب پاکستان کو ٹیسٹ کرکٹ کا باقاعدہ درجہ ملا، تو عالمی کرکٹ کے ماہرین اور برطانوی میڈیا کا خیال تھا کہ یہ نئی نویلی ٹیم دنیا کی تجربہ کار ٹیموں کے سامنے چند دن بھی نہیں ٹک سکے گی۔ مگر دنیا اس وقت ایک شخص کے ارادے اور جنون سے بالکل ناواقف تھی: عبدالحفیظ کاردار۔

کاردار صاحب صرف ایک کرکٹر یا کپتان نہیں تھے، وہ ایک آکسفورڈ ایجوکیٹڈ، انتہائی سخت گیر اور اعلیٰ بصیرت کے مالک قائد تھے۔ انہوں نے تقسیمِ ہند سے پہلے بھارت کی طرف سے بھی 3 ٹیسٹ میچز کھیلے تھے، لیکن قیامِ پاکستان کے بعد انہوں نے صفر سے ایک ایسی ٹیم تشکیل دی جس کے پاس نہ بہترین سہولیات تھیں اور نہ عالمی کرکٹ کا کوئی خاص تجربہ۔

کاردار نے پاکستانی کھلاڑیوں کے ذہنوں سے یہ احساسِ کمتری ختم کیا کہ گورے یا ہندوستانی کرکٹرز ہم سے بہتر ہیں۔ انہوں نے ٹیم میں بے خوف کرکٹ اور کسی بھی قیمت پر نہ ہارنے کا جنون بھر دیا۔ ان کی اسی قیادت کا نتیجہ تھا کہ پاکستان نے ٹیسٹ سٹیٹس ملتے ہی اپنے ابتدائی چند سالوں کے اندر دنیا کی تمام بڑی کرکٹ پاورز کو ان کے خلاف کھیلی گئی پہلی ہی سیریز میں کم از کم ایک میچ ضرور ہرایا:

بھارت (1952): اپنے کیریئر کے دوسرے ہی ٹیسٹ میں، لکھنؤ میں بھارت کو انہی کے گھر پر اننگز اور 43 رنز سے شکست دی۔ دلچسپ بات یہ ہے کہ اسی میچ میں نذر محمد (مستقبل کے اسٹار مدثر نذر کے والد) نے پاکستان کی طرف سے پہلی ٹیسٹ سنچری بھی بنائی: پاکستان کے ٹیسٹ ڈیبیو کے صرف آٹھ دن بعد۔

انگلینڈ (1954): دی اوول کے تاریخی میدان پر کرکٹ کے بانیوں کو 24 رنز سے چت کیا، جہاں فضل محمود نے 12 وکٹیں لیں۔

نیوزی لینڈ (1955): سیریز کے پہلے ہی ٹیسٹ میں، کراچی میں، نیوزی لینڈ کو اننگز اور صرف 1 رن سے مات دی۔

آسٹریلیا (1956): کراچی میں آسٹریلیا سے اپنی پہلی ہی ملاقات میں انہیں 9 وکٹوں سے اڑا کر رکھ دیا۔

ویسٹ انڈیز (1958): پورٹ آف اسپین میں طاقتور ویسٹ انڈین ٹیم کو اننگز اور 1 رن سے عبرتناک شکست دی: حیرت انگیز بات یہ ہے کہ پاکستان یہ پوری سیریز 3-1 سے ہار گیا تھا، مگر یہی ایک جیت کاردار کے عزم کی گواہی کے لیے کافی تھی۔

Seventy-two years ago today, Pakistan recorded their first-ever Test victory over England, winning a closely fought match at The Oval by 24 runs.

The main difference came from Fazal Mahmood, who produced an outstanding bowling performance to finish with match figures of 12 for 99. He dismissed England’s leading batsmen Len Hutton, Peter May and Denis Compton in both innings.
