We give cyclists a voice at City Hall. Join our diverse member-based organization today and be part of the push for a cycling city for all!

Cycle Toronto is a member-driven community of cyclists from every geographic area in Toronto that represents a cross-section of Toronto’s cyclists. We provide a vibrant and amplified voice to achieve the common goals of safety, legitimacy and accessibility of cycling in Toronto. We coordinate city-wide advocacy on behalf of our members and provide resources for cyclists to be effective local advocates themselves. We promote cycling in an inclusive, friendly and inviting manner.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fact sheet from 2023 highlights the safety benefits of the Idaho Stop or stop-as-yield: "Many States have enacted bicyclist stop-as-yield laws to enhance safety and protect cyclists. Based upon the current research and data available, these laws showed added safety benefits for bicyclists in States where they were evaluated, and may positively affect the environment, traffic, and transportation."

While the stop-as-yield is not (yet) legal in Toronto, we strongly object to dedicating limited police resources to enforcing this road safety theatre.

Be courteous, be aware, and stay safe out there.

The city can't delay (again) to upgrade the existing painted bike lanes on Eglinton Ave East to protected bike lanes.

See our letter to City Council:

Re: IE30.5 - Metrolinx Eglinton Crosstown LRT - At-grade Segment and Tunnel Section - Traffic and Parking By-law Amendments and Road Dedication

Dear Mayor Chow and Toronto City Council,

As part of amending the series of by-laws to reflect the existing streetscape along Eglinton Avenue, we urge you to direct staff to prioritize, in the 2027 implementation plan, upgrading the existing ~8 km of painted bike lanes between Leslie St and Kennedy Rd to protected cycle tracks.

Unlike the Council-approved protected bike lanes west of Mt Pleasant Rd that are blocked from being built for the foreseeable future, these bike lanes are already on the ground, and upgrading them to protected bike lanes would not involve the removal of travel lanes or run afoul of any provincial legislation.

Upgrading these lanes with protection should be an easy win for the city to keep moving forward with its cycling network plan, and would enable more people along this corridor to choose to ride a bike beyond the few strong and fearless cyclists already using these lanes. Especially with the successful opening of the Crosstown LRT and the new bike lanes along Sloane Ave, added protection to the bike lanes along Eglinton east would form a vital connection for folks in Wards 15, 16, 20, and 21, and across Scarborough. We urge you not to delay and miss this opportunity.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Michael Longfield
Executive Director

FREE bike parking with Cycle Toronto bike valet is available every match day at Inukshuk, Ordnance, and Hanna, and every Fan Festival day at Inukshuk.

(That also happens to coincide with the June 19 arkellsmusic show down at RBC amphitheatre.)

Beat the traffic and ride your bike.

The proposed provincial regulations around e-bikes are [shockingly] pretty good! Better distinguishing between e-bikes and other e-moped/motorcycle style vehicles is long overdue.

What we still want to see: lowering the 120 kg max weight for Class 2, and mandatory battery safety standards.

Did you know that in-line skates and roller blades are not legal in Toronto bike lanes and cycling infrastructure like this stretch by Little Norway Park? Regardless of whether you're making full stops at intersections or not?

Of course we'd expect Toronto Police Services to know all the rules of the road and enforce them accordingly. (Although we're pleased these folks apparently were not tackled and concussed for their infractions.)

Toronto Police Services know that drivers are overwhelmingly responsible for people being killed or seriously injured on our roads and the "Big 4” driver behaviours known to cause injuries to all road users: speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

It's right there in this June 1st media release about.... yet another enforcement crackdown on people on bikes.

Taxpayers are footing the bill to the tune of $1.43B for this road safety theatre.
