Today we celebrated the unveiling of the Soaring for Greatness mural at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Created by Anishinaabe artist and visual storyteller Emily Kewageshig of Saugeen First Nation, the mural now has a permanent home in the MAC lobby.

The unveiling also honoured the Armstrong family and the legacy of the late George Armstrong, former Toronto Maple Leafs captain and Indigenous Algonquin-Anishinaabe hockey trailblazer.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s celebration and helped honour this mural.

Join us for the official unveiling of Soaring for Greatness, a mural by Anishinaabe artist Emily Kewageshig, celebrating Indigenous excellence in sport.

Jen Gonzales, Interim Vice-Provost, Students at TMU, recently had the opportunity to meet Emily and get a sneak peek at the mural ahead of the unveiling.

Come meet the artist and celebrate the rich traditions of sport and physical culture within Indigenous communities, and their continued impact on athletic life at TMU.

As special guests, the Armstrong family will be honoured in recognition of the late George Armstrong, former captain of the Leafs and an Indigenous Algonquin-Anishinaabe hockey trailblazer whose home ice was the former Maple Leaf Gardens.
