More important than your workout is what you do with your body when you are not in the gym.
This came up in a live coaching session this week and it stopped the conversation.
My client noticed that his body tends to relax and lose core engagement outside of training. And that is exactly when he gets hurt. Not during the workout. After. On the couch. In the chair. In the everyday moments where posture disappears and nobody is watching.
Here is why that happens.
The patterns you build in the gym only stick if the mindset travels with you. The moment you sit down and collapse into the couch your body loses the connection you just spent an hour building. The tissue relaxes. The core disengages. The integrity drops.
And then you wonder why you feel tight the next morning or why that nagging injury keeps coming back.
Two things change this.
First β bring awareness to how you conduct yourself in training. The ranges you go into. The stability you have. The integrity of each movement. Not just the weight on the bar.
Second β more important than any of that is what you do with your body between sessions. How you sit. How you breathe. How you carry yourself through the rest of your day.
When the majority of your life reflects posture and integrity your body starts to run on autopilot. The connection becomes stronger. The load becomes easier. Training becomes more effective because the foundation is always there.
This is what GEM gives you. Ground. Engage. Maintain. Not just in the gym. Everywhere.
If this resonates share it with someone who trains hard but keeps getting injured outside the gym.

Deans Mobility Training
Mobility and flexibility are the building blocks of strength, so you can be strong in, and out of the gym.
The secret to myofascial release is not the pressure. It is what you do while you hold it.
Most people press into a tight spot and immediately roll through it or push past the discomfort. That is exactly why nothing changes. When you rush through tension your nervous system stays guarded. The tissue never releases. You are just moving over the surface of a problem that stays exactly where it was.
Here is what actually works.
Find the spot. Press into it. Now stop moving and stay there. Ground through every contact point β your feet, your hands, wherever the floor is holding you. Engage your core gently so the rest of your system is stable and not bracing around the tight area. Then breathe. A full breath in, let the ribcage expand, exhale slowly and feel the tissue sink into the pressure.
That is GEM applied to myofascial release. Ground. Engage. Maintain.
Take the glute med or piriformis as an example. These muscles sit deep and they carry everything β your hip rotation, your lower back stability, the way you walk and run and sit. When you press into them with a ball and actually stay there, breathing, organized, grounded β you will feel the tissue start to melt. That is not you forcing anything. That is your nervous system deciding it is safe to let go.
Now here is where most people stop. This is actually where the work begins.
Once the tissue releases, move into that area. Take the joint through its range. Let the body explore what just became available. The window after myofascial release is when the tissue is most receptive to new movement patterns. You are not just releasing tension. You are creating space and then teaching the body to own it.
Release. Move. Integrate.
That sequence is what creates change that lasts beyond the session.
This happened in a live coaching session. This is what I teach every client.

This is not a workout tip. This is a different way of thinking about your body.
Compensation is what your body does in the absence of your guidance. It manages until you are ready to show up to guide it where to go.
A stiff ankle. A tight hip. A shoulder that will not rotate fully. Your body did not fail you. It found a workaround and kept you moving. That is not weakness. That is intelligence.
The problem is not the compensation.
The problem starts when that workaround becomes the only pattern your body knows. When the system keeps adapting around the same restriction because nobody ever gave it a better direction to move in.
And when your body needs guidance and does not receive it, it speaks louder.
That is what pain is. Not a breakdown. A signal. Your body asking you to show up and guide it somewhere new.
The moment you start thinking in planes of movement, in joint relationships, in how the whole chain connects from your ankles to your shoulders β your body responds. It melts. It shifts. Because it was always ready to adapt. It just needed a direction.
This is what I work on with every client. Not chasing symptoms. Redirecting the system.
This is where GEM begins.
Ground into your foundation. Engage the system around the restriction. Maintain that awareness as you move into new range.
If your body has been trying to tell you something for a while, this is the conversation worth having.

This is not a workout. Watch.
Your pec minor is probably the reason your shoulder feels stuck, tight, or restricted. This muscle gets chronically short from sitting, screens, driving β anything that keeps your arms forward and your chest closed. And because it connects directly to the back of the shoulder blade, when it shortens it pulls the whole shoulder with it.
Most people try to stretch the shoulder directly. That is the wrong move.
You need to release the line. Here is how.
Grab your hand behind your back at whatever angle you can reach. Ground through your feet. Engage your core. Now instead of just pulling back, think about lengthening first and then driving the arm out. That single intention changes everything about how the stretch lands.
When your core is engaged your shoulder becomes stable. That stability is what allows the fascia to release rather than guard against the stretch. You are not forcing anything. You are creating the conditions for the tissue to let go.
Want to go further? Add a gentle neck rotation away from the side you are stretching. That pulls the entire fascial line from the front of the shoulder all the way up through the neck. One movement. The whole line.
This is Self FST. Your system organized. Your fascia releasing. No table. No therapist. Just a body that knows how to work on itself when it is properly organized.
Ground. Engage. Maintain.
Try it today and share this with someone who wakes up with a stiff or achy shoulder every morning.
Woke up stiff this morning.
So I did this.
Feet pressing into each other. Glutes firing. Kettlebell tracking straight overhead. Lats under tension. Core working the whole time.
Ten repetitions and my body felt aligned again.
This is not just a shoulder exercise. This is Self FST in action.
When GEM is active through this movement, grounded through the feet, engaged through the core and glutes, maintaining that awareness as the kettlebell travels overhead, the fascia loads alongside the muscles. The same traction your body receives on a treatment table, created from within. Every rep stretches and strengthens at the same time.
This is one of the tools I reach for.
After long periods of sitting. First thing in the morning. Whenever I feel myself collapsing into poor posture.
Ten reps. Full range. GEM applied throughout.
Your body knows how to organize itself. Sometimes it just needs a reason to.
This is part of what I teach inside the Six Week Functional Mastery Program. FST, movement integration, and the GEM framework working together so your body stops fighting itself and starts functioning the way it was designed to.
Share this with someone who wakes up stiff every morning and thinks that is just how it is.
This is not a workout. Watch.
This is a body applying traction to its own fascia. Decompressing the spine. Loading the connective tissue that holds everything together.
No table. No therapist. No appointment needed.
Most people separate stretching and training into two completely different things. Different days, different mindsets, different goals. And then they wonder why they feel tight the morning after training hard.
The body does not work that way.
When your system is organized β when you are grounded through your foundation, engaged through your core, and maintaining that awareness as you move β every exercise becomes therapy.
Every rep loads the fascia with intention.
Every hold creates the traction that most people only experience on a treatment table.
I call this Self FST.
It is the principle behind everything I teach. It is why my clients do not just feel better after sessions β they move differently. Because we are not just stretching tissue. We are teaching the body how to organize itself so it can do this work on its own.
You do not need more time in the gym.
You do not need more stretching sessions.
You need a different relationship with how you move.
That is what Self FST is about.
More coming in this series every other day. Follow along if this resonates.

We say we don't have time to take care of ourselves.
And yet we always find time for everything else. For everyone else.
I've worked with people for years who aren't lazy or undisciplined. They're depleted. Because they've been pouring from a body they stopped listening to a long time ago.
Movement, nutrition, stress, purpose. We treat these like items on a to-do list. Things we'll get to when life settles down.
The body doesn't wait for life to settle down.
What I teach is that posture is the entry point to all four. Not posture as how you sit at a desk. Posture as a return to yourself. A moment of coming back into the body you've been living in but not really inhabiting.
You don't need more time for that.
You just need to remember it's available to you. Right now. In whatever you're doing.
What would change for you if you actually did that once today?

You love your pets.
You love your parents.
You love your kids.
You love your partner.
And you say you love yourself.
So you create a life that enables you to give.
Through gestures, talks, time spent together.
Love becomes visible through the care one receives.
But can you truly give love to someone
if you haven't found it within?
In the absence of love within,
gestures lose their charge.
Silence feels like discomfort.
Talks feel empty.
Your existence loses its depth.
So you ask your mind to solve it.
You think your way out of the predicament.
In the name of love.
The struggle continues.
Until one day you look at yourself in the mirror.
You catch a glimpse of you.
The one giving.
The one that looks empty.
You look into your eyes.
Breathe out.
And maintain that awareness of being there.
Feeling the warm rug under your feet.
Breath moving in and out of your diaphragm.
Helping your lungs expand.
Again.
And again.
You can feel your legs.
You can feel the energy in your hands.
Your shoulders drop.
Your neck lengthens.
You feel your posture.
You feel presence.
You become love.
For that instant,
filling your cup.
Bringing that love filled vessel
to your pets, your partner, your kids,
your parents, your work, your chores.
To life.
You cannot get or give something in life that you already are.
You are love. You are presence.
You become it through your posture.
