Two Sticks vs One Stick — Block & Counter Drill

Our students continue to strengthen their foundational skills in Filipino Martial Arts by working through structured drills that refine timing, spatial control, and defensive awareness.

In this progression, we focus on managing a single‑stick attacker using a two‑stick defensive framework. The emphasis is on blocks and counters

Beyond the mechanics, this drill reinforces a core principle we teach across all levels: whether you’re training single or double stick, technical focus, intent always come first. These fundamentals build confidence, adaptability, and the ability to respond intelligently in various situations.

More than sticks. More than movement.

At today’s Toronto Catholic District School Board Filipino Summer Camp, students were introduced to three Filipino words that shape every class:
🟨 G**o – Teacher
🟨 Pugay – Respect
🟨 Sinawali – Weave

Before any technique, they learned that Filipino Martial Arts is rooted in culture, character, and community. Pugay teaches respect for our teachers, training partners, and ourselves. Sinawali builds coordination, focus, and teamwork through weaving movements. And a g**o is more than an instructor—they are a mentor who guides growth.

Watching students embrace these traditions with curiosity and enthusiasm was a powerful reminder that teaching Filipino Martial Arts also means sharing Filipino history, language, and values with the next generation.

Maraming salamat to TCDSB for creating opportunities to celebrate culture through movement and education. 🇵🇭

If your school, camp, or organization is interested in bringing Filipino Martial Arts to your community, contact us at [email protected].

Every strike tells a story. Every lesson builds character. Pugay!

Technique is only part of the journey.

Students working on single-stick and double-stick disarms, sharpening their timing, coordination, awareness, distance and decision-making.

In Filipino Martial Arts, every drill is about more than learning a technique. It's about developing discipline, adaptability, confidence, and respect—for your training partners, your community, and the responsibility that comes with knowledge.

One repetition at a time. One lesson at a time. Always learning. 🇵🇭

Students putting in the work on foundational abaniko strikes—building strong Filipino Martial Arts fundamentals. 🔥

“Abaniko” (meaning *fan*) refers to a whipping, fan-like striking motion used in Filipino Martial Arts, typically delivered with speed and control using the stick. It’s a fundamental technique in stickfighting, emphasizing fluid wrist action, angle changes, and quick directional strikes.

Through consistent repetition and focused drilling, students are developing precision, structure, and control with every strike. This is where coordination, timing, wrist mechanics, and endurance are built—one rep at a time.

Abaniko is a core movement in Arnis, Eskrima, and Kali. Training it properly helps students understand range, angles, flow, and how to generate power while maintaining control in stickfighting.

These sessions are all about refining the basics—grooving the movement, building muscle memory, and laying the foundation for more advanced techniques.

No shortcuts—just disciplined training, attention to detail, and consistent effort every class.

"Why do the rattan sticks smell so good?"

This question came from a student during our Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Filipino Martial Arts Pilot Program as they held a yantok (rattan) stick for the first time.

It stopped the class for a moment.

In all our years of teaching Filipino Martial Arts, it was a first.

Before any technique or movement was introduced, the students were already engaging with the material in a deeply sensory and curious way—observing, questioning, and connecting with the cultural context of what they were holding.

That moment opened up a discussion about rattan as a natural material, its role in Filipino Martial Arts (Arnis/Eskrima/Kali), and the broader cultural and historical significance behind the practice.

At Combat Science - Warrior Arts of Asia, we view these moments as essential to learning. Skill development is important, but so is curiosity, cultural awareness, and creating environments where students feel safe to ask questions and explore meaningfully.

Programs like this pilot with TCDSB highlight the value of experiential, culturally responsive education—where movement, culture, and inquiry come together in a way that resonates with students beyond the training space.

Sometimes the most important learning begins with a simple question.

Throwback to 2024, when Senior Master JB Ramos received the Trauma-Informed Care Advocate Award at the Beacon of Hope event in Cebu, Philippines.

This recognition reflects the heart of what we teach at Combat Science: that Filipino Martial Arts (Arnis, Kali, Eskrima) are not only systems of movement, but pathways to empathy, resilience, and community care.

We are proud to see FMA principles recognized for their role in trauma-informed healing. Respect, discipline, and mindful movement are values that support individuals and families from all backgrounds.

Our gratitude goes to UDRiVe Group for this acknowledgment and for championing trauma-informed initiatives across the Philippines. This strengthens our commitment to inclusive, accessible empowerment — both inside and outside the training space.

As we continue supporting programs like ALERT - Awareness Based, Life-Saving, Empowerment, Resilience Training, we move closer to a shared vision: a trauma-informed Philippines by 2030, where compassion and understanding guide community development and national progress.

Thank you to our students, families, partners, and supporters. Together, we continue building spaces where every person feels valued, empowered, and understood.

In Filipino Martial Arts, stickwork is more than learning how to use a training tool—it is a pathway to understanding movement, timing, distance, coordination, and self-protection.

One of the unique aspects of 🇵🇭 Filipino Martial Arts is that many stick techniques directly translate into empty-hand applications. The principles remain the same, helping students develop practical skills that can be adapted across different situations.

Sttudents explored how movements practiced with sticks can seamlessly transition into empty-hand techniques, building confidence, awareness, and a deeper understanding of body mechanics.

Every drill is an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with a rich martial arts tradition that welcomes people of all backgrounds and experience levels.
