Accessory programming for powerlifters

I think depending on the goal you have 2 camps

1) Freedom , exercise of choice for a muscle group

2) Prescriptive, very detailed you have to do “x” because its going to improve some bottleneck

I think both camps can learn from each other

If you want a bicep exercise for a lifter that is more experienced, giving some autonomy to “preacher curl” and give them autonomy to pick a machine or db version

Or upper back row (chest supported, seated cable or unilateral row)

Since sbd is so prescriptive, sometimes for longer term clients its important to provide some guidelines but give them some autonomy to choose the specific accessory for the 8-12 week period

Obvs with rehab or an accessory done a specific way may yield a specific outcome, its best you are more specific with prescriptions but for general back and arm training I think we can provide a bit more freedom and autonomy for clients that understand what the coach wants

Coaches are essentially skilled trade workers

You can understand all the theory in the world but knowing how to apply it and also understanding the principles will allow you to use the right tool for the right problem

Yes having systems is important but being open to exploring other methods is just as important

Adapt your systems to the athlete in front of you , vs molding the athlete to your system

New meta, try a strategy and stick to it and if it doesn’t work, you will learn from it‼️‼️

Sport and mastery has helped me and translated many lessons that to this day applies to life

The ripple effects of mastery teaches you beyond just the surface level accomplishments and I owe a lot of my abilities to navigate tough situations to my experience with sports growing up or any hobby I try to master or dedicate a lot of time to

Hopefully this resonates with you
