Officially introducing Al Hackner as Team Byrd's Coach for the 2026-2027 Season.
🦅 In the Falconry world, Hacking is a training method that helps young birds of prey reach their hunting potential by giving them exercise and experience. This technique is used to prepare the falcon to become an independent hunter.
Looking forward to having Hackner help us reach our full hunting potential out on the ice! 🥌

🦅 Byrd Fact Friday! 🦅
Naturally, Team Byrd's favourite bird is the Long-Billed Curlew. It possesses the longest bill of any shorebird in North America. The tip of the bill is flexible and packed with sensory nerve clusters, letting the bird feel around for deep-burrowing shrimp, crabs, and worms in the dark mud.
Bonus Fact! 🎉
Despite the name 🥌 Stone Curlews , which are found in more tropical areas, aren't Curlews at all! 👎

🦤Byrd Fact Friday🦤
The McCarville brothers are from Nipigon Ontario. You probably recognize that town name from headlines just last year when a Crested Caracara was spotted outside of the small northwestern town. The last time the large tropical falcon was spotted in the region was over 130 years ago.

🦃 Byrd Fact Friday! 🦃
Where's Leupen?
Our 2nd Kris grew up in Geraldton, Ontario.
The Geraldton area is officially designated by the Ministry of Natural Resources as having the highest and most consistent population of ruffed grouse in the province.
If you're ever walking through the bush and hear what sounds like a distant, accelerating engine, it's probably a ruffed grouse. A male grouse stands on an elevated perch, such as a fallen log or a rock, and violently beats his wings. This motion happens so fast that it creates a miniature vacuum; as rushing air fills the void, it generates a deep, thumping shockwave that can travel for up to a half-mile.

🐦 Byrd Fact Friday! 🥌
Did you know Team Byrd's skip, Kurtis Byrd, shares more than just a last name with a bird?
Kurtis and Hockey Hall of Famer Larry "Big Bird" Robinson both hail from the small community of Wi******er, Ontario. Robinson, born in Wi******er, went on to win six Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens and earned the nickname "Big Bird" thanks to his towering 6'4" frame.
Now we're not saying growing up in Wi******er guarantees greatness... but the evidence is starting to pile up. 😉
Happy ! 🐦🥌
