With an early start, we headed east to Terrace Bay where we launched to head even further east by boat to fish for and sample some Coaster Brook Trout for the Aquatic Research and Monitoring Section of the MNR… our destination was Jackfish Harbour on Lake Superior.

We left in a very dense fog… thank goodness for the Humminbird Helix 9 and great GPS reception!!

We measured and sampled about a dozen fish today - taking length, girth and weight measurements as well as collecting a couple fin rays for aging and DNA work that will help detail specific family groups of these Coaster Brook Trout and their geographic extent. We even caught our 2nd fish with a radio transmitter inserted in its belly!!

Was a great day - thanks to Jungle Joe Kostecki of Mighty Mitch & Jungle Joe's Jigflies for all his help collecting and sampling today!!

And, of course, no day of hard work goes unrewarded… yummy steak and taters for dinner!!

Looking forward to the weekend… Can’t wait to throw this one Joe!!

Hard to believe, but my summer Guiding season is half over!! Here are a few highlights from the first part of the season.

I’ve had a few new dates open up because of travel plan changes due to the forest fires, and a couple others dates due to unforseen medical cancellations.

So if you’re interested in chasing trophy Brook Trout and Lake Trout, here’s the last dates I have available:

Lake Nipigon - the land of giants - rarely disappoints… yesterday, my clients Ettore and Charles both set some new PB’s as they caught their first-ever Nipigon Brook Trout… and also a whopper of a Lake Trout!!

Charles, an experienced fly-fisherman from Nova Scotia, caught his 18”Brookie on a fly, and Ettore, a repeat client from Thunder Bay, caught his 20.5” & 3.75 lb trophy spin-casting.

Charles had never caught a Lake Trout, let alone caught one off a downrigger trolling deep, so they wanted to experience the dual-species trips I provide to clients… no problem!!

Fishing with barbless hooks, long limber rods, light line and level wind reels created a few challenges for Charles as a few big Lakers managed to slip the hook… but he put it all together (with a little coaching) when it mattered most!!

Congratulations for his first-ever, and new PB Lake Trout were certainly in order after a slow & careful 15 minute ‘tug of war’ battle that saw several line-searing runs with this 40” & 25.3 lb Lake Nipigon trophy!!

Congrats fellas on your new PB’s… it was a great day on the water!!
