Why is building resilience in children so important?
1) it creates confidence
2) it builds more positive self-esteem
3) it helps with problem solving
These are just a couple of the benefits of pushing children out of their comfort zone.

As parents, we just want to see our children flourish in everything they do, but sometimes our own fears can get in the way. We hover or push all issues out of the way so our kids donât get hurt, whether physically or emotionally. While in the short term this feels better, allows for emotional safety or allows for more success, in the long run it may limit your child.
This may sound a bit odd, but let them experience the emotional and physical part of failure! Itâs through trials and tribulations, advocating for themselves, and trying new things that the real growth starts to happen. Experimenting, finding their own voice, experiencing failure and learning to stand back up and try again, these are all things that help build resilience and give children the skills they need to navigate more confidently through life.

Saying âjust be more confidentâ could actually be worse than you think.
The child is struggling and it will almost always be impossible to just âbe confidentâ. They are coming in feeling nervous, scared, maybe they are overthinking the skill they are trying to do, or maybe they are slowly falling out of love with something they enjoyed for a long time.
As parents, all we want is to see our little ones be confident and it can be hard when they are not.
So, be specific in what you say: âThat was a great swingâ, âI am proud of you for continuing to step in the boxâ, âyour practice was amazingâ, âyouâre constantly improving,â âyou made a great play at first base!â or even âIâm really proud of how hard youâre workingâ.
As a parent, focus on what they did well at and let the coaches focus on what they need to improve on.

Is discomfort the way to help build confidence?
Pushing ourselves and our children to do hard things creates more confidence. Children are able to see what they are capable of doing which then helps build resilience, determination, leadership skills, and life skills in general.
Without doing the difficult things, it is hard to know what we are capable of. Without being faced with hardship, itâs hard to understand our strengths. And if we donât face small moments of challenge, it becomes very hard to work through big ones when they come (and we know that life will present hard moments). Â

Is your childâs comfort zone quietly holding them back?
Comfort feels safe, but confidence is built in the moments that feel a little scary, a little hard, a little new.
Our classes are designed to gently push kids beyond what they think they can do and celebrate them every step of the way because the best thing we can give our kids isnât an easy ride, it is the belief that they can handle whatever comes their way.

One of the most powerful things you can do for a childâs confidence is simple: find the win first, always.
Before the correction. Before the technique note. Before anything else, find what they did well, and acknowledge it because kids rise to what you recognise.
Thatâs the culture we build in every single class we offer. We create space where effort is celebrated, progress is seen, and every child leaves feeling capable.

đ Did know that a goldfish has a 10 second memory and researchers believe that itâs the happiest animal on the planet?
Often I am asked how to build confidence and resilience with my younger clients, well..
Miss a kick? Forget it.
Bad round? Gone.
Tough day? Leave it.
Next play. Next rep. Next chance to be better.
Thatâs the mentality we build in every class and session for all our clients. Embrace the successes and learn from the failures (but donât dwell on them).
Show up. Reset. Go again. đȘ
