When belaying for your partner, it's important to know proper techniques and to be fully focused on the task at hand. 👇

Your guide hand should be above your belay device, at roughly eye level. This hand helps you guide and feed slack to your partner as they climb up.

Your brake hand is of upmost importance. This hand should be 6 inches below your belay device and should never leave the rope, as you should always be prepared to catch a fall.

•Braking Position (Active): Your hand slides along the rope to let it move with the climber as they go up.
—Use this positioning while taking slack as the climber moves up safely
•Locked Braking Position (Off): Your hand squeezes the rope down and behind your body to stop the rope from moving
—Use this position when a climber stops to rest, falls, or when you lower them

🧗‍♀️PBUS Hand Sequence
•Pull—Slide your guide hand up the rope toward the climber, while your brake hand pulls rope down and through your belay device
•Break—With your brake hand below the device, enter locked braking position
•Under—Move your guide hand and place it UNDER your brake hand to grip the brake strand securely
•Slide—Hold the rope firmly with your new, temporary, hand (the guide hand), loosen your original brake hand slightly, and slide it back up the rope toward the device to reset positioning.

👉Not only should you be paying close attention when belaying (and climbing), but communication is key between you and your climbing partner as well. Ensure you both know your cues and signal calls such as "falling", "take", "slack" etc.

Be safe out there and have fun!!
