Practice Range Opening Update

After careful consideration, we are pleased to confirm that our new practice range will officially open in June 2027.

Construction of the range has progressed very well, and we are extremely pleased with how the facility is coming together. The grow-in and establishment of the new turf remains an important final step, and giving the range additional time to mature will help ensure that we open the facility at the standard we want our golfers and guests to experience.

We had hoped to offer a soft opening this fall; however, doing so would place additional pressure on the newly established turf and create further disruption to day-to-day play on Captain’s Hill. For these reasons, we have made the decision to allow the range to fully establish over the fall and spring before welcoming golfers in June.

Captain’s Hill will continue to operate as an 8-hole course for the remainder of the 2026 golf season.

We know there has been tremendous interest and anticipation surrounding the new practice range, and we share that excitement. While we are disappointed that golfers will have to wait a little longer, we believe allowing the facility the time it needs now will provide a much better experience when it opens.

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we complete this exciting addition to our golf facility. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the new practice range in June 2027 and sharing more details as we get closer to opening day.

⛳ Golf Architecture & Design 2026

Week 17 — Who Is Old Tom Morris to Architecture?
Old Tom Morris (1821–1908) is considered the father of modern golf course architecture. He expanded greens, shaped fairways, introduced formal bunkering systems, and refined maintenance standards. His work at St Andrews influenced every architect who followed. Many architectural principles used today trace directly back to him.

⛳ Golf Architecture & Design 2026

Week 16 — Modern Green Design Trends
Contemporary greens often blend subtle contours with expanded short-grass surrounds. Architects favour tightly mown runoff areas, allowing multiple recovery options. Greens today typically encourage the ground game more than designs from the 1980s-2000s, which often relied on forced carries and heavy bunkering. The goal: more variety around the putting surfaces.

Behind the Destination: Pippy Park ⛳️

Destination St. John’s is proud to shine a light on the incredible partners we value so deeply. It is all of us working together that makes our destination truly special.

Today, we are highlighting Pippy Park. Set along the northern boundary of St. John’s, this wide mantle of green offers spectacular views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean, and year-round recreational opportunities.

For guests looking to stay a while, the campground offers a peaceful home base surrounded by trails and green space. Golfers can tee off in the park’s 27 holes, including Amiral’s Green, a challenging and scenic 18 hole design. After a round, guests can unwind at the Admiral’s Green Clubhouse, home to a golfer’s lounge, banquet facilities, and a pro shop.

Whether you are pitching a tent, playing a round, or planning an event, Pippy Park proves that great experiences can be found outside of the centre city.

⛳ Golf Architecture & Design 2026

Week 15 — Evolution of Tee Box Placement
Early teeing areas were simple patches of ground. As golf evolved, tees became formal structures that controlled yardage, angle, and difficulty. Modern tee systems now accommodate a wide range of abilities, ensuring the course plays as intended for everyone. Architects use tee positions to alter sight lines, shape intended ball flights, and maintain balance across the hole.
