💛 September is Su***de Awareness Month 💛
September is a time to raise awareness, start conversations, and remind one another that every life matters.
At Kalon Services NL, we believe that su***de prevention is everyone’s responsibility. Our staff and family-based carers are trained in ASIST (Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training), giving them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognize when someone may be at risk, respond with compassion, and connect individuals with the support they need.
For the children, youth, and families we serve, having caring adults who are prepared to notice, listen, ask, and respond can make a meaningful difference.
Su***de prevention starts with conversation.
Sometimes, simply asking “Are you okay?” can open the door to support.
This month, we encourage everyone to:
💛 Check in with someone you care about
💛 Listen without judgment
💛 Take signs of distress seriously
💛 Ask directly when you are concerned
💛 Reach out for help when you need it
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to start the conversation.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, more than 900 children and youth are currently in care and unable to live with their families. The province continues to face a critical shortage of foster homes, meaning some children must be placed far from their communities, schools, friends, and support networks.
For many children, family based care provides more than a roof over their head—it offers stability, connection, belonging, and hope during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Becoming a family based carer doesn't require perfection. It requires compassion, patience, and a willingness to open your heart and home to a child who needs support.
The need is real. The impact is lifelong.
If you have ever considered fostering, now is the time to learn more. One caring home can change the trajectory of a child's life. ❤️
