We help Mountain Bikers gain confidence and have more fun via our lessons and courses in Squamish, BC

My name is Jake Johnstone and I created The Mind Mountain to combine my passions for Mountain Biking, Coaching, and Mindset. Originally from Australia, I was inspired by the laid-back mountain sports scene I experienced while working in New Zealand. This fueled my lifelong passion for adventure and spurred the move to BC in search of a bigger playground. As a self-confessed mountain sports addict,

August is coming to an end, and summer is flying by 🫣
Good news is September's still wide open! That's a full month of prime riding season left before Kat and I pack up and head out to Tasmania. AND, some of the best trail conditions are in September with the cooler temps and grippy dirt.

If you've been meaning to book a lesson or finally sort out what's been holding your riding back, now's the window.

Head to the link in bio to book or shoot us a DM for more info. See you on the trails 🤘

This week, we want to shine a light on Chad. An absolute legend of a guy and recent graduate of our Full Circle Coaching Program. Chad flew in from the East Coast a few weeks ago.

Five full days on the trails here in Squamish together. Jumps, drops, steeps, corners, and even manuals... But what made those five days so impactful was that we weren't starting from scratch. It was building on eight months of remote coaching, support, and groundwork we'd already laid out before he ever touched down here in BC.

A week after he got home, this is what he had to say:
"Jake. I am still buzzing from the trip. Truly an experience of a lifetime! You do such a great job! I am feeling so centred and balanced on the bike right now. Super fun!"

And the best part is, the adventure doesn't end here. Chad and I will continue to work together via our remote coaching platform, as he integrates these skills on his home trails 🤙

If you've been thinking about what a full year of mentorship could look like for you, whether you're local or not, get in touch to find out how Full Circle could work for you.

Big news! 🤙

The Mind Mountain is expanding... and not in the way you might expect.

No big team, fancy vehicles, or rental shop. Better.. a second home base!

Kat and I will be splitting our time between Squamish, BC and Derby, Tasmania. Basing ourselves in the crown jewel of the southern hemisphere for their spring and summer, before returning to BC from April to September each year.

Two of the best destinations to ride a mountain bike in the world + our proven Full Circle Framework = year-round progression 🌏

Here's what this means for you:

Private Lessons, Guided Rides, and our Full Circle Coaching Program will now also be available out of Derby, Tasmania.

Tasmania Expedition riders get access to discounted pre-trip privates.

Full Circle members can split their sessions between Squamish and Derby as they wish.

Riders based in AUS/NZ now have easy access to the same level of support our North American mentees rave about.

Fired up about this one. Any questions? Drop them below or shoot us an email 🇦🇺🇨🇦

The missing piece in a lot of riders progression is purposeful practice, and even more than that, being part of a community that encourages and motivates you to keep making time, even when life gets hectic.

Every fortnight at our Skills & Drills rides, we make it easy to do exactly that.

This was a special one - we had Chad out from the East Coast, stoked on his newly refined braking skills, Joel up from Galbraith for the first time post (equipment failure) injury, Kim celebrating an epic 12-months of growth in our Full Circle Program, and Nicole being welcomed into the community for her first ride with us.

Want to come and see what all the hype is about? We have just a few more Squamish S&D Rides left this season - reach out and we’ll get you rolling.

Steep shoots into catch berms.

Most riders only visualize the hard part and skip rehearsing the second half: the actual body movement needed to make that turn. The part where your head turns, your hips twist, and the bike supports you rather than runs away.

New YouTube video breaks it down 🎥

‘Since our lessons - the biggest differences I’ve noticed are on the harder stuff, just riding it all instead of walking… Before I was like thinking thru everything and where do I put my wheel and how do I turn etc etc. now it’s starting to feel like skiing where I look at where I want to go and just do the line without thinking. I’m taking the fun line and popping or race lines and keeping speed rather than poking thru the least technical way down.’

Some huge wins for Ryan, who has been training with us in both hemispheres since 2023.

If steep chutes have you grabbing brakes and hoping for the best... this one’s for you.

Our latest YouTube video breaks down how to confidently link steep chutes into catch berms, confidently and with control.

Learn how to:
✔️Stay centred on steep terrain
✔️Control speed without panic braking
✔️Carry flow through the corner instead of just surviving it

The harder you grip, the more you tense up, the more "out of control" you feel - it's a feedback loop, and it doesn't break by trying harder. It breaks by redefining what control actually means at your level.

New blog post is live, breaking down:

→ Why "control" means something different at every level
→ The fear-response feedback loop that keeps riders stuck
→ What real control looks like when stopping isn't an option

CONSISTENCY, the 3rd of our 4 C's in our Full Circle MTB Framework.

Moving mountain biking skills from intellectual understanding to deep-seated habits requires not just regular riding, but regular practice.

And this is exactly what a small yet dedicated crew of local and visiting riders do every second Tuesday, from April through September, at our Skills & Drills Rides.

These rides are free for Full Circle Program members to join and are open to other riders who have done multiple lessons with Jake.

If you are looking to get more mileage and feedback while connecting with a community of like-minded, like-skilled riders, click the link in bio for more info.

Deliverance, one of Squamish's OG double blacks. Steep, deep, and… awesome!!

Full tutorial coming soon, but for now, watch how we use compressions after rock rolls, drops, and corners to manage speed and stay in control all the way down.

Stay tuned 👀
