Barry ran his first marathon at 49 and recently registered for his 10th.

But about two years ago, hospitalization forced him to make serious health changes. He joined a gym not long after that, working out three days a week. Now 65, he recently hit his 100th workout.

He’d tried strength training before but is thriving now with coaching.

"The trainers are on you with the little things, proper form," he says. "It has made me so much stronger physically and also mentally fit. I wouldn't have gotten a kayak unless I knew I was capable of doing it."

Barry bikes and kayaks now, activities that once felt out of reach. The strength work has paid off in his running, too, improving both performance and recovery after races.

He’s found it helps to work out with a group of friendly regulars. And he enjoys group outings together on holidays and other occasions. The social aspect is helpful to Barry, as it is for many people over 50.

“We challenge each other, and that's a helpful tactic,” he says. "The involvement with the other members is a must for me."

One hundred workouts in, Barry isn't slowing down — he's just getting stronger. Want to see what strength training can do for you, too? Call us today and let’s get going!

There’s no law saying eggs are strictly for breakfast. This recipe, lightly adapted from the Cooking + Kate blog, is a delicious example of a protein-forward meal that hits the spot at any hour. ⁣

If you can crack an egg, you can make this dish and have it on the table in under 30 minutes. No measuring tools are needed, so long as you’ve got enough tomatoes to cover the bottom of your pan. Serves 2-4. – Susan Puckett⁣

𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬⁣
• 3 cups (about 1 ½ pints) halved cherry tomatoes ⁣
• ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese⁣
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves (with extra for garnish)⁣
• 2 tablespoons olive oil⁣
• Salt and freshly ground pepper⁣
• 1 or 2 teaspoons minced garlic⁣
• 4 eggs⁣

𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬⁣
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.⁣

2. Place the halved tomatoes in an even layer in a medium-sized baking dish or large oven-proof skillet. ⁣

3. Bake the tomatoes for 12 minutes, then remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the tomatoes with the Parmesan and basil, drizzle with the olive oil, and season lightly with salt and pepper. ⁣

4. Stir the garlic into the mixture. Gently crack an egg over the tomatoes, keeping the yolk intact. Repeat with the remaining eggs, dispersing them somewhat evenly over the dish.⁣

5. Return the dish to the oven and check at 8 minutes. The egg whites should be set while the centers still jiggle when you give the pan a shake, assuring that the yolks are still runny. Return it to the oven for a minute or two if the whites aren’t quite cooked through but bear in mind that they’ll continue to cook out of the oven.⁣

6. Season for a little more salt, pepper, and basil and serve immediately in shallow bowls with toast for sopping.⁣

𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 🏆⁣

Our first member win to share is Colette!

Colette had an electrical issue under her trailer at the lake—and she was the one who had to crawl underneath to deal with it!⁣

On all fours, staying low enough to avoid hitting her head or scratching her back, but somehow keeping herself off the ground so she wouldn’t get completely filthy. 😂⁣

As she crawled underneath, Colette said she could hear the Mission: Impossible music playing in her head and went full Tom Cruise stealth mode!⁣

And then it hit her…⁣

All those crawls we do in training PREPARED HER FOR THIS! 💪⁣

She even pictured the ProActive trainers in her head as she made her way through!

This is a WIN—not just because Colette got the job done, but because her training helped her feel capable when real life demanded it.⁣

Strong. Capable. Ready for life. 👏⁣

Way to go, Colette! 🏆⁣

Rolling is a great way to train the vestibular system, build reflexive strength in our core, organize spinal movement & keep the nervous system happy.

We use rolling to better our connection & feedback from the body to brain so we can improve in all areas of physical function.

Even if you’re working out regularly, getting stronger, and feeling great… it’s important to know that all that isn’t just one part of your life that you put on a shelf and forget about.⁣

What you do before, after and between workouts can affect how well you move, recover, and keep progressing. Here are five things worth your attention.⁣

𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐔𝐩. You need to prepare your body for exercise. It’s a lot to ask it to go from sitting to working out, so give it time to prepare. Start with a few minutes of easy movement to raise your heart rate, then move the joints and muscles you’ll be using. If squats are coming, for example, practice the movement with little or no weight first.⁣

Think of a warmup as a simple transition from daily life to training, not as another workout you must survive.⁣

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Muscle is crucial to daily function as the years go by, helping with strength, mobility and independence. Protein provides the building blocks your body needs to maintain and build it, particularly when you’re also doing resistance training. But studies show “older” people tend to eat less in general, and less protein in particular.⁣

But don’t turn eating well into a protein-only contest. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other minimally processed foods matter. And hydrate. Good training needs good fuel.⁣

𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩. Sleep isn’t wasted time. It’s part of the program. The National Institute on Aging says older adults, like other adults, generally need about seven to nine hours a night.⁣

Sleep supports physical and mental health. If you’re training hard while routinely sleeping five hours, another workout probably isn’t the missing ingredient.⁣

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. Balance is easy to ignore because you might not notice it changing. Then one day a curb, slippery sidewalk or awkward step reminds you.⁣

The CDC specifically recommends balance activity along with aerobic and strength exercise for adults 65 and older. Lunges, single-leg exercises, yoga and more can help.⁣

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. A gym workout is terrific, and we want to see you in here a few times a week. But it doesn’t give you permission to spend the rest of the day channel surfing on the couch. Most active adults say fitness helps them enjoy activities more, so don’t miss out on that benefit.⁣

Walk around the block. Enjoy your favorite sports and hobbies. ⁣
Work in the yard. Play with the dog and the kids. Carry groceries. The CDC puts it simply: some physical activity is better than none, and it all adds up.⁣

Pay attention to the small things, keep doing them, and give your workouts the support they need to keep paying off.⁣
We are here to help get you started or keep you going. Come see us or call today.⁣
