Check out this lost gem I found hiding in the vault.

This photo was taken almost 30 years ago, in August 1997, when my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Barbados... and when I had no grey hair!

Even on vacation, I’d try to sneak in a little exercise here and there. The pistol was always a good one. It looks simple, but it requires a pretty interesting combination of strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

The good news? I can still do it just as well today.

I’m obviously a lot older now, but how old is my balance?

And more importantly, can a one-leg balance test really tell you your “balance age” or biological age?

That’s the subject of my latest article. I take a closer look at the popular one-leg stand test, what the research actually tells us, what it doesn’t, and how balance should really fit into your training as you get older.

I don’t buy organic avocados.

Not because I don’t care about pesticide exposure. I do.

But not all produce carries the same pesticide burden, and “buy everything organic” isn’t necessarily the smartest way to spend your grocery dollars.

Avocados consistently rank among the lower-residue choices. Other foods deserve considerably more attention.

So where is the organic premium actually worth paying?

In my latest article, I break down the 2026 Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, Consumer Reports pesticide-risk data, what happens to measurable pesticide exposure when people switch to organic food, and where conventional produce is a perfectly reasonable choice.

The goal isn’t fear.

It isn’t perfection.

It’s making better choices where they matter most.

**Eat the produce. Reduce the unnecessary exposure.**

Training isn’t just about looking better or lifting more.

It’s about staying capable, independent, strong and able to do the things you love for as long as possible.

Dig small holes. Build bigger results.

Every workout creates a recovery demand.

One quality work set?
A smaller hole.

Multiple brutally hard sets?
A much deeper one.

The question isn’t how much punishment you can tolerate.

It’s how much productive training can you recover from... and repeat?

My new article explores the science behind low-volume, high-frequency training, why one serious work set can be surprisingly effective, when more volume makes sense, and why this method and GVT 2.0 are not opposites. They’re different tools for different jobs.

Train hard enough to adapt.
Recover.
Come back stronger.

You can fall asleep just fine… but can you stay asleep?

That’s the real issue for a lot of people, especially as they get older.

In my latest article, I break down why people wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. and what to do about it. We cover the basics first, then move into more targeted strategies for the right person, including a caffeine-free ketone experiment before bed.

If you’re tired of renting your sleep instead of owning it, read this one.

Is your olive oil really what you think it is?

I tried the popular fridge test with two bottles from our pantry. One became cloudy and jelly-like overnight; the other stayed much more liquid. Interesting? Absolutely. Proof that one is authentic and the other is fake? No. The fridge test can show how oils behave when chilled, but it cannot reliably establish purity.

Swipe over for another practical example. The sun-dried tomatoes I use contain just sun dried tomato and sea salt—no mystery oil at all. If you buy tomatoes packed in oil, read the ingredient list carefully.

Restaurants are another trap. “Olive oil” may actually be an oil blend, and “butter” may be margarine. Ask what they’re using.

Take-home: buy extra-virgin olive oil from reputable sources, look for freshness and traceability, store it properly, read ingredient lists and don’t assume the label tells the whole story.

You can’t stop the clock. But you don’t have to help it along.

Turning 55 has made me think less about staying young and more about protecting what matters: health, strength, mobility and independence.

Good habits don’t make anyone bulletproof, but the choices we repeat over the years still matter.

Clint Eastwood’s line “Don’t let the old man in” has stuck with me for a long time. That’s the message behind my latest article—not fighting age, but refusing to surrender.

“How do you come up with content?”

This is where it starts.

I jot my thoughts down in my daily planner, then expand each topic on my computer.

Every time I read a book, listen to a podcast, go for a walk, work with clients, experiment with a concept—or simply sit and think—I come up with another idea.

And the more I read, learn, experiment and apply, the more there is to write about.

You can see what I have lined up for September. By the time October rolls around, the pages will be filling up all over again.

Never fails.

Apparently, my content calendar is literally a calendar. 😂

First paper, then screen. That’s how I’ve done it for years, and that’s how I’ll keep doing it.

They look almost identical. They don’t do the same job.

Watch closely.

In the first half, Amanda demonstrates Ab 45s: feet anchored, torso coming up from the floor, arms staying in line with the trunk.

In the second half, she performs the Reclining Field Goal: feet unanchored, torso controlled from the top down, arms finishing vertically.

That subtle difference changes the exercise.

Ab 45s involve more hip-flexor contribution and greater trunk/hip integration — something that can actually be useful for athletes.

The Reclining Field Goal shifts the emphasis toward abdominal control, is easier to scale, and may be a better fit for many general trainees.

And here’s the part people often get wrong:

Hip flexors aren’t “bad.”
The question is whether you want them contributing substantially to the exercise you’re doing.

So which one is better?

Wrong question.

Which one better matches your goal?

I break down the mechanics, technique, progressions, common mistakes and who should use each one in the new article:

Ab 45s vs. the Reclining Field Goal: Which Core Exercise Is Right for You?
