Chairs for Restoration 👌
Last Sunday we took some time to slow down, breathe and use alllll the yoga props we are so fortunate to have in the beautiful healing space of The Loft. Including chairs 🪑 🫶
There’s this thought out there that Chair Yoga, is ONLY for the injured, weak, or senior aged practitioner. Meanwhile, I do know of a seductive, sensual offering out there in the world 🤭that uses a chair as a prop and those people using them most definitely do NOT feel or use that chair as a “crutch” per say do they? You get what Im sayin here? 🫣
This is not to say, that Chair Yoga isn’t a beautiful practice or a specific class intentionally designed for those needing it because getting up and down off the floor is difficult for a variety of reasons (age, injury, illness, disease, recovery etc) and that IS a wonderful practice and offering in of itself. Chair Yoga is beneficial in SO many ways and we love that yoga can be so accessible to all.
But this is a reminder that props are not “weakness”. Props are strength. Props such as chairs, bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps are ALL wonderful ADDITIONS to the practice of Yoga. And we can use them in a variety of ways for mobility, strength, flexibility, grounding, stabilizing, balance, rest and restoration. 🥰
This particular picture and pose is one we created for grounding, mental/emotional/energetic and physical REST in last weeks “The Sunday Exhale”. (Pssst we have another one coming up this Sunday at 10:30am again!) 😀
It’s unbelievably calming, soothing and grounding. And who doesn’t need a few minutes to sit in that quiet space of release & surrendering? 🙋♀️
It’s time we truly start to honour and practice the art of letting go, and focus just as much on stillness and slowing down, JUST as much as we focus on being “busy” and active.
True balance and self awareness is a life filled with BOTH energies and qualities.
THIS is YOGA. 🧘♀️
The concept of strength and softness in the Yoga Sutras comes from Sutra 2.46, known as Sthira Sukham Asanam, which translates to "the posture should be steady & comfortable.
*Sthira (Strength/Steadiness) Means firmness, stability, and the effort or grounded energy required to hold a position without collapsing.
*Sukha (Softness/Ease)
Means sweetness, comfort, spaciousness, and the release of unnecessary tension.
So what does that mean???
*Balanced forces:
Every practice needs both an active container of strength and a receptive quality of softness.🫶 And we can receive both, with a chair.
And then we bring that sutra to LIFE OFF THE MAT. 🧑🩰 Beyond the mat: This principle applies to daily life as a way to stay resolute during challenges while remaining gentle and open-hearted.
Everything we do here, on our sacred mat, we carry with us in our backpack of yoga/life lessons.
