Feel Better. Perform Better.

This is my dad. He turned 80 in January.

This week he trained in the gym three times. He walked about 7 to 8 kilometres most days (with my mom; as he does most weeks). My dad went for a hike that lasted a few hours and he worked around the yard, maintained his pool, and spent time fixing his fence.

To him, that’s just another day.

He’s not trying to set a record and doesn’t have anything to prove. He just wants to keep doing the things he enjoys.

Meanwhile, I’m 49 and currently dealing with a shoulder injury that flared up after sleeping on it wrong. One minute you’re training for races and planning the next event and the next you’re trying to figure out how you got injured while unconscious.

Aging is humbling. Over the last few years I’ve dealt with a number of overuse injuries from the foot and ankle, to patellar tendinopathy that forced me to stop running for weeks at a time (while training for a major competition in 2026), along the normal wear and tear that comes from decades of training and competition.

I coach people through hip and knee replacements, cancer treatments, arthritis, and many joint irritations and muscle injuries. It doesn’t matter who you are, your body does not get a pass when it comes to aging. Bodies wear down. Recovery takes longer.

The answer isn’t to stop. The answer is to make adjustments and keep moving.

That’s why I believe in strength training. It helps you be independent and free. It will keep you hiking, travelling, gardening and carrying your groceries. It will keep you doing the things that make your life worth living.

When I look at my dad, I don’t see an 80 year old who won the genetic lottery. Instead I see someone who has spent decades investing in his health and is now collecting the dividends.

That’s what I’m training for. Not next year. Not my next race. I’m training for 80.

For those who are new here, I thought I’d introduce myself.

I’m Steve.

I’m a kinesiologist, exercise physiologist, strength coach, athlete, program director at Envision Fitness, and proud dog dad to Edith.

I’ve been coaching people for over 20 years and I am the program director of Envision Fitness. What started as a passion for helping people move better and get stronger has turned into a career that’s allowed me to work with hundreds of incredible people over the years.

Most of my clients aren’t elite athletes.

They’re people who want to stay active, keep up with their kids and grandkids, recover from injuries, feel confident in their bodies, and continue doing the things they love for as long as possible. That’s where I do my best work.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with novice exercisers to elite athletes, helping them build strength, improve performance, and stay healthy. I’ve developed Swim Strong and Run Strong programs to help athletes at any age stay in the game. I have a special interest in running mechanics and helping runners move more efficiently and stay resilient.

Outside of coaching, you’ll usually find me training for something. Running trails, swimming laps, lifting weights, or signing up for events that seemed like a good idea at the time (or just stupid enough to try).

Like many of you, I’ve dealt with injuries, setbacks, frustration, and the challenge of balancing training, work, and life as I’ve gotten older. Those experiences have probably taught me as much as any textbook ever did.

These days my focus is simple.

Help people get stronger.

Help people stay active.

Help people stay in the game.

Thanks for being here and following along.

The other day I was training three people with joint replacements at the same time.

Two had double knee replacements. One had a hip replacement.

Someone commented on how great it was that we could work with people facing such different challenges. It struck me that not everyone realizes that’s a big part of what we do.

Over the years, we’ve helped hundreds of people navigate injuries, surgeries, illness, and major life obstacles. Knee and hip replacements. Shoulder injuries. Back pain. Arthritis. Cancer treatment and recovery. Chronic conditions. The list goes on.

When someone walks through our doors, we don’t focus on what they can’t do. We focus on what they can do—and build from there.

Exercises are modified. Programs are adapted. Progress is measured against where that person started, not against someone else’s journey.

If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t exercise because of my injury, surgery, or medical history,” you’re not alone. And in many cases, strength training is exactly what helps people regain confidence, rebuild strength, and get back to doing the things they love.

Life doesn’t always go according to plan. But whatever challenge you’re facing, we’ll meet you where you are and guide you forward safely and confidently.

We don’t train perfect bodies. We train real people.
