Why is handstand training so important?

Because the handstand is the foundation behind so many advanced skills.

It builds:

Alignment

Upper-body and core strength

Balance and body awareness

Control for more advanced skills

Walkovers, handsprings, tumbling, acro, aerial transitions, hand to hand in stunting all become easier when the handstand is strong.

Do not rush past the foundation.

Build the handstand. Unlock the skills.

A great liberty isn't created by spending more time in the stunt.

Before an athlete can confidently stand on one foot in the air, they first need exceptional balance, hip stability, ankle strength, body alignment, core control, and the ability to make tiny corrections without losing position.

These aren't just "cheer skills." They're movement qualities that can—and should—be developed long before stepping into a stunt group.

At ABS, we don't just practice liberties. We help athletes develop the movement behind every flyer position through purposeful coaching, guided flexibility training, strength development, and body awareness.

We encourage every athlete to work on their flexibility outside of class, but the biggest improvements come from understanding how to train effectively. Learning flexibility is a skill in itself, and with the right coaching, athletes gain the confidence to work through challenges safely and consistently.

Our goal isn't simply to help athletes hold liberty today. It's to develop the movement that supports every stunt they'll learn in the future.

Better movement creates better flyers.

A strong scorpion isn't created by stretching your leg a little higher each week. It depends on shoulder mobility, back flexibility, hip control, balance, body awareness, core strength, and the ability to maintain correct body alignment while standing on one leg. Too often, athletes repeatedly force the position instead of developing the qualities that make the position possible.

At ABS, we break these requirements down and train them individually. As each movement quality improves, athletes don't just achieve a better scorpion—they become stronger flyers, stronger bases, cleaner jumpers, better tumblers, and more complete athletes.

Exceptional cheer skills aren't built by chasing positions. They're built by developing the movement behind the position.
