There are five recognized caribou subspecies in North America's Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young Clubs record books, four of which can currently be hunted. They are spread from coast to coast, stretching from Alaska to the island of Newfoundland off Canada's coast. Here, the woodland caribou is found, the only place on earth where nonresidents can legally hunt them. Tags are limited and highly coveted, with the government regulating the number of permits issued annually to maintain healthy herd numbers across the island.

Matt DeFrank was fortunate enough to pick up one of these tags and immediately began planning a group trip with family and friends, who would be hunting moose and black bear—abundant on the island. The crew started in Colorado and made the cross-country trek, covering a total round-trip distance of just over 3,200 miles, including ferry rides to and from the island.

Matt wasted no time and harvested a great bull on the first day after passing up several other good bulls. He spent the rest of the hunt helping the crew fill their tags as they packed their coolers full for the return home.

This hunt was in early October, and Matt chose the following gear for his trip: Peloton 240 Hoodie, SuperDown Pro jacket, Kutana Storm rain gear and gaiters, and Peloton 240 beanie.

Getting that perfect picture of your moose is something that will create memories of your Newfoundland moose hunting adventure for the rest of your life. It can take some effort to position the moose perfectly to capture the right angle, lighting and background. We’ve seen many variations over the years, some great and some not so great.
