Skipper Vince Somoza and the crew of Mojito (Nepean Sailing Club) took first place at La Coupe du Québec hosted by the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club this past weekend. Eriks Kalvins and the crew of Black Pearl (Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club) took 2nd place, while John Rae and the crew of ShinDig (Nepean Sailing Club) took 3rd. Only one point separated the top 3 boats. The return of La Coupe du Québec to the Montréal area saw eleven crews from eight yacht clubs take part in the two-day event.
Day one brought light, shifty winds and stifling heat to challenge the competitors over three races. Day two brought moderate to heavy winds over 5 races. Both days saw competitive racing and multiple position changes, with the top boats regularly rounding the windward and leeward marks in very close proximity.
The event was also the final of the Canadian Series to award qualifying berths for the 2027 J/24 World Championship in Rochester, New York. The top three boats with combined points from the J/24 Ontario Championship held at ABYC in May, and La Coupe du Québec are ShinDig, Black Pearl, and Cluster (Andrew Kenny, RCYC). One all-youth team led by Cailem Austin of the Hudson Yacht Club finished 7th overall and collected points towards winning the Youth Team berth for next year’s World Championship.
The J/24 Canada event schedule will conclude September 30 - October 4 with the J/24 North American Championship hosted by the Port Credit Yacht Club. It will also be the final World Qualifying event.

After careful consideration, the J/24 Canada Council has decided not to reschedule the 2026 Canadian Championship. Instead, we believe our time and resources will be better invested in supporting the two remaining events on this year's calendar:
La Coupe du Québec - Pointe Claire Yacht Club, August 7 - 9: https://www.pcyc.qc.ca/en/event/j-24-coupe-du-quebec/
North American Championship - Port Credit Yacht Club, September 30 - October 4: https://2026j24nachampionship.com
An updated explanation of the 2027 World Championship qualifying berth allocation will be available on the J/24 Canada Events page. https://www.j24canada.ca/events
We encourage all members to support the J/24 class in Canada by registering for and participating in these two events. Your continued involvement is essential to the strength and growth of our class.
Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you on the water.
Regards,
Vince Somoza
President

Nathan Bresett of the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club generously made his second J/24, Woodjchuck, available this past weekend to crew members from the Nepean Sailing Club and the Whitby Yacht Club for some "match racing" during the annual Eastern Yachting Circuit regatta hosted by BQYC. We tried to keep it close, but Nathan and his crew sailed superbly in light and shifty conditions on the only day of course racing. Congrats on your second place finish Nathan and crew!
