BYC Youth Sailing

The BYC team just finished the famous CORK regatta in Kingston. The four day event had mostly light-medium winds except for the first day where the Kingston thermal brought in a 12-16 knots breeze. Congratulations to Cameron Laing for winning the ILCA 7 fleet, and also team alumni Evania Lovshin who won the ILCA 6 fleet. Kyle D’Juran and Eva Doucette also put in strong performances making the podium by finishing 2nd and 4th respectively. See results below👇

Britannia sailors have been on the podium for every event this season, and have won 4 of the 5 major events 💪

Meanwhile, team members Brodie Sorensen and Cedrick Dumais have just finished their qualifying series at the U19 worlds in Denmark, and the championship series starts tomorrow.

We’re back home for the next couple weeks before travelling to Victoria, BC to represent BYC at the Sail Canada Youth National Championships, which is the qualifying event to represent Canada at the ISAF Youth Worlds regatta in Portugal in December.

The BYC laser team just finished the District 2 Championships alongside the Fruitbowl Regatta in Hudson. Saturday had 4 races with diminishing breeze from 9 to 6 knots from ESE. The winds were surprisingly stable for the direction. Sunday had completely different conditions with 18-22 knots from the West, and some steep chop over 3 races. The race committee did a great job and got 7 solid races in throughout the weekend. Congrats to Nicola Gilmour and Vita Faid for finishing 1st and 2nd in the ILCA 6 fleet.

Eva Doucette meanwhile was competing at the Sail East Regatta in St. Margaret's Bay over the weekend. She had a decisive victory in the ILCA 4 fleet with 5 bullets over 6 races and dropping a 2.

The BYC team has had at least one sailor on the podium for every event they’ve done so far this season 💪

Back home for training a couple weeks and then back to Kingston for CORK😎

The Britannia Laser team just completed the Sail Central regatta at Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club in Toronto. Four races on Saturday in big choppy waves, with a decreasing easterly breeze throughout the day from 10 to 7 knots. Sunday had two races in lighter and flatter conditions with 4-7 knots from the SE.

Congratulations to Eva Doucette for winning the event with such a consistent performance against the top youth sailors of Toronto.

The BYC Laser team just finished the Laser Canadian Championship in Kingston with 7 races held over three days. Conditions were relatively flat with a light to medium oscillating breeze, except for the first day where it was more steady around 9-11 knots. So lots of black and yellow flags and long days. Competition was fierce with almost the entirety of the national team members participating, along with many international sailors.

The Britannia sailors had a great event with some solid performances for all the sailors. See results below.👇

Seven BYC Laser Team sailors just finished the Europa Cup regatta with 19 countries represented in Portimao, Portugal.

Competition was fierce in the 90 boat ILCA6 fleet across 5 races in the 3 day event. The first and fifth race were relatively light with 8-10 knots and the middle 3 races were held on the second day with winds steady at 22 knots with gusts hitting 25-26 knots. With big ocean waves and breeze, the conditions were challenging for our BYC sailors but they showed grit and determination throughout the day.

Congratulations to Brodie Sorensen and Cameron Laing for qualifying in Gold fleet!

The race committee did a fantastic job and it was one of the most perfectly run events I’ve attended, not to mention a delicious regatta BBQ. Thank you to the Clube Navale de Portimao for their generous hospitality and support.

The team will continue training here until next Saturday and the forecast has big, big breeze on the horizon.

The BYC sailors have finished the ILCA midwinters east in Miami this past weekend with only 1 race in the championship series on Sunday.

Conditions were 16-18 knots with thick chop and a small wave period making conditions quite challenging. Not to mention the offshore breeze just off the windward mark. Needless to say there were quite a few capsizes across all fleets.

Congratulations to Cedrick Dumais with a significant lead throughout the silver fleet race and his 1st place overall finish in his fleet!!

The Britannia team has just finished the qualifying series at the competitive Midwinters East ILCA championship in Miami.

Five races were held over three days with the 2nd day having no races. The weather over the two days of racing was hot and sunny, with stable winds of 6-8 knots from the SE, and lots of small waves and turbulence from the high boat traffic in Biscayne bay.

The championship series will start tomorrow on the final day tomorrow, with slightly windier conditions on the forecast.

Three of the 5 Canadians to qualify for Gold fleet are from BYC with team members Luca Nelson and Cedrick Dumais missing the fleet cutoff by 3 and 8 points respectively.
