Can you imagine stepping onto the ice without a helmet?

Before the 1979–80 NHL season, helmets were optional at the professional level, and many players took to the ice without head protection.

That changed when the NHL required every player who signed a professional contract after June 1, 1979, to wear a helmet. Players who had signed before the cutoff date were permitted to continue playing without one.

The new requirement was a huge step toward protecting players and promoting a stronger culture of safety throughout hockey, helping make helmets an essential part of the game we know today.

A smooth hockey season starts long before the first puck drops.

League and team organizers— this one's for you! Take a few minutes now to make sure everything is in place for the season ahead:

✅ Connect with your CARHA Hockey representative
✅ Confirm your official season dates
✅ Submit an accurate, up-to-date team roster
✅ Ensure every player has completed and signed their waiver

Completing these important steps early can help prevent last-minute delays and keep your season running smoothly from opening face-off to the final buzzer.

Once the paperwork is complete, there’s only one thing left to do— hit the ice! 🙌
