🐴 The Foot That Couldn’t Take a Nail 🔧
Some cases just aren’t textbook. This horse’s hoof wall was too compromised to hold a nail — full stop. No margin for error, no standard shoeing job to fall back on.
So we adapted. Glue-U shoes, bonded on instead of nailed, to protect what little sound hoof wall was left. Then rockered the shoe on top of that to ease breakover and take real strain off every step this horse takes.
This is the side of farrier work nobody sees in a quick trim video — the cases where you can’t just reach for the usual setup, where you have to think through every option and build a solution from the ground up to keep a horse sound. No shortcuts, no easy fix. Just problem-solving until the horse can move comfortably again.

Bringing the foot back under the horse: why toe length matters 🐴
Foot-first, straight up the leg. I like showing this angle because it’s exactly what tells me whether a foot is set up to support the horse correctly, or working against it.
When I leave a toe too long, the point of breakover shifts forward, away from the center of the leg column. That means every time this foot loads and prepares to leave the ground, the horse has to lever over a longer distance before the foot can break over. That delay does a few things mechanically:
🔹 Increases strain on the deep digital flexor tendon — a long toe acts like a longer lever arm, and the DDFT has to work harder to rotate the foot forward
🔹 Pulls the foot out from under the leg column, so instead of loading straight up through a stacked, balanced axis (fetlock–pastern–coffin joint), the weight gets loaded onto a foot that’s out in front of where it should be
🔹 Delays breakover at exactly the moment jumpers need it most — takeoff and landing are high-force, split-second movements, and a foot that’s slow to break over costs the horse timing and adds cumulative stress with every single stride
My goal every trim cycle is to bring that toe back and get the foot positioned underneath the leg, so the column from fetlock to ground is straight and the weight-bearing surface is centered under the load — not stretched out in front of it.
It looks like a small adjustment on paper, but multiplied over thousands of strides in a season, it’s the difference between a foot that supports soundness and one that’s quietly working against it.
Balance isn’t just how the foot looks standing still — it’s about setting up the mechanics for every stride the horse takes.

Grateful for glue-on shoes 🐴🔧
A few years ago I’d have said no way — too fiddly, too expensive, not worth the learning curve. Now they’re one of the best tools in my kit.
For the horses with thin walls, cracked hooves, or recovering from an abscess, glue-ons let me get support on without a single nail — huge for comfort and healing. For the ones prone to pulling shoes in mud or turnout, the adhesive bond holds up in ways nails just can’t match. And for young or nervous horses still learning to stand for shoeing, no hammering means a much calmer appointment for everyone.
It’s changed how I think about problem feet. Instead of “this horse just can’t hold a shoe,” it’s “let’s find the application that works.” That shift alone has been worth it — for my clients, their horses, and honestly for my own confidence as a farrier.

Before & after: correcting a medial-lateral hoof imbalance 🔨🐴
Left (before): You can see the hoof was landing unevenly, with flare pulling the wall out of alignment and uneven weight distribution across the foot. Left unaddressed, this kind of imbalance puts extra strain on the tendons and ligaments and can lead to uneven wear, cracking, or long-term joint stress.
Right (after): Trimmed the hoof back to a balanced base, bringing the medial and lateral walls back into alignment so the foot breaks over evenly and loads correctly. Set with a shoe to support that new balance through the next cycle and give the horse a solid, even platform to stand and move on.
Consistent, proper trim cycles are what keep this kind of correction holding long-term — small adjustments early prevent bigger problems down the road.

Trim & shoe reset ⚒️
Before: overgrown wall length and flare pulling the hoof capsule out of alignment with the coffin bone — breakover was set too far forward, adding leverage on the deep digital flexor tendon with every stride.
After: wall dressed back to re-establish proper hoof-pastern axis, breakover brought back under the toe, and a fitted shoe set to support the frog and heel platform for a more even load through the whole limb.
Small adjustments like this add up over a shoeing cycle — better breakover, less strain, more comfortable movement.

🚨 Horse Owners: Let’s Talk About That "Three-Legged Lame" Nightmare 🐴🚑
We’ve all been there. You go out to the pasture, and your horse is barely putting weight on a hoof. Your heart drops, you think the worst... and then the vet or farrier finds it: the dreaded hoof abscess.
While it’s a relief it’s "just an abscess," getting them under control quickly isn't just about pain management—it’s about protecting your horse’s long-term soundness. Here’s why you can’t just "wait it out":
1️⃣ The Pressure Cooker Effect
An abscess is essentially a localized infection (pus) trapped between the sensitive laminae and the hard hoof wall. Because the hoof doesn't expand, that pressure has nowhere to go. To a horse, it feels like having a literal hammer trapped inside a shoe. 🔨
2️⃣ Preventing "Gravel" & Tracking
If an abscess isn't drained or treated, the infection will take the path of least resistance. It can travel upward, breaking out at the coronary band (often called "gravel"), or worse, burrow deeper into the internal structures of the foot.
3️⃣ Protecting the Coffin Bone
In severe, untreated cases, chronic infection can actually begin to affect the coffin bone (P3). Bone infections (osteomyelitis) are incredibly serious, expensive to treat, and can be life-threatening.
4️⃣ Support Limb Laminitis
When a horse is severely lame on one leg, they put 100% of their weight on the "good" leg. If they stay non-weight-bearing for too long, the healthy leg is at risk for support limb laminitis, which is a true emergency.
💡 Quick Tips for Management:
• Keep it Clean: Use a soaking boot or a clean wrap to keep debris out.
• Draw it Out: Epsom salt soaks or ichthammol drawing salves are your best friends.
• Call the Pro: Don't dig for it yourself! Let your vet or farrier find the track to ensure you don't cause permanent damage to the sole.
Bottom line: A little proactive care today saves a lot of heartache (and vet bills) tomorrow. 🛡️✨

Transformation Tuesday: Comfort Starts from the Ground Up 🐴👞
Take a look at this side-by-side! The photo on the left shows where we started, and the photo on the right is this horse freshly shod and balanced.
When a horse’s feet get a bit long and the angles start to migrate, it puts extra strain on their tendons and ligaments. By backing up that toe and getting the hoof capsule properly supported under the bony column, we aren't just making them look sharp—we're improving their movement and longevity.
Notice how much more "stood up" and supported the pastern looks in the second photo. A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping these athletes feeling their best!

🚨 Don’t Let the "Silent Crumbles" Take Down Your Horse: Understanding White Line Disease 🚨
It starts small—maybe just a little separation where the hoof wall meets the sole—but if left unchecked, White Line Disease (WLD) can become a nightmare for both horse and owner.
Often called "seedy toe," WLD isn't actually a disease of the white line itself, but a fungal and bacterial invasion of the inner hoof wall. These opportunistic organisms eat away at the hoof tissue, literally hollowing out the foot from the inside out.
Why You Can’t Afford to Ignore It:
• Structural Collapse: As the bacteria "digest" the hoof wall, the connection between the coffin bone and the outer shell weakens. In severe cases, this can lead to mechanical laminitis or rotation.
• The Muddy Season Factor: WLD thrives in anaerobic (oxygen-free) environments. When wet mud packs into those small separations, it seals the bacteria in, creating a perfect "greenhouse" for infection to spread rapidly.
• Hidden Danger: A hoof might look decent from the outside, but underneath, it could be hollow halfway up the wall. By the time you see a massive crack, the damage is already deep.
What We Do About It:
Treatment is all about re-oxygenation. As a farrier, my job is to debride (remove) the dead, infected tissue to expose the area to air, which kills the anaerobic organisms. Followed up with specialized topical treatments and a strict balancing trim, we can grow in a healthy, connected wall.
Pro Tip: Early detection is everything! If you notice "crumbly" horn during picking or see widening at the toe, don't wait for the next cycle. Let’s get ahead of it before the mud makes it worse.
