In 2025, the horse world said goodbye to one of its final living connections to perhaps the greatest racehorse America has ever known.

**Maritime Traveler, a son of the legendary Secretariat, died at the remarkable age of 35.**

Born in 1990, Maritime Traveler arrived nearly two decades after Secretariat produced his first foals and just months after the great stallion himself died in October 1989.

He was from **Secretariat's final crop of foals**.

Maritime Traveler never achieved anything resembling his father's extraordinary fame on the racetrack, but as the years passed, his significance grew for an entirely different reason.

Secretariat had sired hundreds of foals during his years at stud, but one by one those direct descendants passed into history.

Eventually, Maritime Traveler was believed to be **the last known surviving offspring of Secretariat**.

That made his extraordinary longevity particularly poignant.

Secretariat remains one of the most celebrated horses in sporting history. In 1973, "Big Red" swept the Triple Crown, culminating in the breathtaking Belmont Stakes where he won by **31 lengths** and stopped the clock at **2:24** — a record that still stands today.

More than half a century later, his name remains synonymous with greatness.

Maritime Traveler represented something increasingly rare: **a living, breathing direct connection to Secretariat himself.**

With his passing at 35, an extraordinary chapter in racing history quietly came to an end.
