Among the inductees into the 2026 New Waterford & District Sports Hall of Fame is the late Mello Nearing, honoured in the Builder category.
A successful professional boxer with 50 wins in 55 professional bouts, Mello dedicated much of his life to developing amateur boxing in New Waterford and throughout Cape Breton. He helped establish local boxing programs, mentored generations of young athletes, and played a key role in training coaches, referees, and officials. His leadership also brought provincial and Maritime boxing championships to the region and earned him appointments with the Canadian Amateur Boxing Team on the international stage.
Mello's lifelong contributions to the sport have also been recognized with inductions into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame and the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame.
Join us on July 13, 2026 at the New Waterford KOC as we induct five individuals and one team into the New Waterford & District Sports Hall of Fame.
Celebrate the outstanding achievements and lasting contributions of this year's inductees as we honour their place in New Waterford's rich sporting history.
