Three Royal Navy personnel have died after a Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed during a training exercise near Sourton, Devon, in the early hours of June 4.

The aircraft came down in a field shortly before 4am, sparking a large fire and scattering wreckage across the area. The Ministry of Defence confirmed all three crew members onboard were killed.

As investigators begin examining the cause, several witnesses described hearing what sounded like a helicopter in distress moments before the crash. One local said the aircraft was flying unusually low and “sounded like it was mechanically failing,” while another reported hearing the engines suddenly go silent before seeing “an almighty flash of red” light up the sky.

Weather conditions at the time were reported to be poor, with heavy rain, strong winds and low cloud across the region.

The Royal Navy has launched an investigation into what caused the fatal accident.
