July was an incredible month on the waters around Nanaimo! With Chinook retention opening on July 15, guests enjoyed fantastic action, and many were able to limit out on beautiful Chinook salmon. Hatchery Coho have been a little more challenging to find at times, but they’ve still provided plenty of excitement.

The biggest Chinook of the month measured an impressive 88cm and was carefully released to continue its journey.

Now it’s Hawgust—one of the best months of the season! The big local Chinook are beginning to move through our area, making this an excellent time to get out on the water.

June delivered some excellent fishing, and July is shaping up to be even better!

Starting July 15, Area 17 opens for Chinook retention, marking one of the best times of the season to get out on the water. Anglers will have the opportunity to retain Chinook, hatchery Coho, and Lingcod all at the same time.

Chinook fishing has been very productive, with strong numbers of migrating salmon passing through our area on their journey south. Coho fishing has also been consistent, although our June catch ratio was approximately 6 wild Coho for every 1 hatchery fish.

Lingcod fishing continues to be outstanding around our local reefs, providing plenty of action and quality fish. We released a 40+ LB Ling on one of our past trips!

If you’ve been thinking about booking a trip, the second half of July is the time to do it. The fishing is only getting better!
