We know that changes to programming can bring questions, so we wanted to provide some additional information about our CanSkate and CanPowerSkate programs and the changes we are making this season.
As a Skate Canada club, we are required to follow Skate Canada programming requirements for all of our sessions, including PowerSkate. Over the past year, we have been working closely with Skate Canada to update our PowerSkate programming and ensure that we are meeting their current requirements while continuing to provide a positive experience for our skaters.
What will CanPowerSkate look like?
Our CanPowerSkaters will share the ice with our CanSkaters. At the beginning of the season, both groups will work on the same foundational skating skills. As skaters develop and progress, the CanPowerSkate group will gradually incorporate more hockey-specific skills and activities.
During the first few weeks, our coaches will spend time assessing the skaters to make sure everyone is in the group that best matches their current skill level. This will give coaches an opportunity to get to know the skaters and ensure they are set up for success.
Skate Canada requires PowerSkate participants to have a minimum of Stage 4 CanSkate experience. This applies to skaters of all ages, including adaptive and sledge hockey skaters.
Because of these requirements, skaters must demonstrate the necessary CanSkate Stage 4 skills before transitioning into the U9 CanPowerSkate program. If our coaches determine that a skater has the required skills, they may recommend a transition into the U9 CanPowerSkate group.
Why are the U5/U6/U7/U8 PowerSkate programs no longer being offered?
We understand that this is a change from what some families may be used to. Skate Canada has advised us that U5/U6/U7/U8 PowerSkate programming can no longer be offered under their current program requirements.
Instead, Skate Canada supports a shared-ice model where CanSkaters and CanPowerSkaters develop their foundational skating skills together. Once a skater has demonstrated the required Stage 4 CanSkate skills, they can transition into the PowerSkate programming and begin developing more hockey-specific skills.
Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible and to ensure that every skater is developing the skills they need at the right time.
Withdrawal Policy
Our regular withdrawal policy applies to all CanSkate and CanPowerSkate sessions.
We understand that change can be difficult, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we adapt our programming to meet Skate Canada’s requirements. We have been working closely with Skate Canada throughout this process and will continue to do everything we can to make the experience positive for our skaters and families.
We also appreciate the feedback we have received from our skating community. Your input is important to us, and we will continue to look for ways to improve our programs while ensuring that we remain aligned with Skate Canada requirements.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our club!
