Self-regard is recognizing when you’re overwhelmed and choosing to slow down.

Rather than chase the overwhelm away, you decide to breathe with it.

You remember that this belongs too. It’s just the weather system of the moment.

𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞?

If you’re a lawyer with ADHD, constant interruptions will cause you to feel more reactive and less in charge of your thinking time. You’ll find yourself saying ‘yes’ and struggling to refocus and complete your work – during your work day.

I have a message for HR professionals.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭.

Let me help you understand ADHD so you can work with your executive to find a solution for everyone involved.

✅ADHD is neurological, not intellectual.
✅ADHD is about managing time, not about depth of service or commitment.
✅ADHD is manageable, not hopeless.

When you misunderstand these facts, you run the risk of causing harm – not only to the executive in front of you, but to the organization at large.

Collaborate with your executive.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞.

If they don’t, find someone who can identify strategies that are a win-win.

They do exist.

Everyone benefits💜💪🎉

𝐌𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠.

How people think. How they learn. How they construct meaning.

Invariably, the attention my clients pay to the way they protect their thinking time determines how well they thrive as leaders.

𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲.

When you assume that your thinking powers will ‘be there’ when you need them to be, you run out of time and creativity.

The ripple effect is:

👉Working late into the night
👉Fatigue
👉Higher stress
👉A tendency to say ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no’
👉Doing it yourself because no one else can do it as well you do

By contrast, when you prioritize your time to think, you show up clear-headed and focused.

✔️You make better decisions.
✔️You have more capacity to listen, notice patterns, ask relevant questions, and see possibilities that aren't immediately obvious.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞
1. Broadcast your availability
2. Think ahead about what actually constitutes an emergency
3. Have a script ready for when you want to say 'no'
4. Create a transition routine

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞
1. Watch your assumptions – the ones that get in your way - they determine your actions.
2. Slow down - be deliberate
3. Tolerate the transition to deeper thinking time
4. Accept the messy – creativity can feel all over the place

When you courageously choose to say ‘no’ in order to say ‘yes’, you create a culture of deliberate, thoughtful choices.

You model how to resist the pull of reactivity and instead create the conditions for deeper work – for everyone.

𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.

You want to relax, of course you do!

But have you noticed your 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 to feeling relaxed?

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 ‘𝐨𝐧’ 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 ‘𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠’ 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠. Anxiety can come up in the empty spaces.

You might feel like searching for your phone or filling your time so that you don’t contact the discomfort of this absence.

Our chronic doing mode becomes a distraction from our inner world. When we come to a stop, the inner experiences of the last many months come right to the surface. Asking to be processed.

And it isn’t comfortable!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Without that awareness, you might be making up stories about the discomfort.

“I should be doing something. Something bad will happen. I’ll miss something if I’m away from the office.”

I know this pattern well.

When I’m on vacation, I’ve learned to give myself at least 3 days before expecting myself to feel more relaxed. Even the expectation of feeling a certain way begins to pass after 3 days.

Instead of focusing on the anxiety, I remind myself to focus only on this moment.

Less stimuli. More beauty.

I use my senses to contact the reality in front of me. A chilled glass on a hot day. A new food to savour. A rosebud that opened overnight.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

After awhile, you may find that you stop expecting anything of yourself.

Isn’t that what vacation is all about?
