I completed several combatives certifications in the past, but coaching has a level of precision and details that I’ve never come across before, not only technically but tactically as well. This is only the beginning and I still have so much to learn, but it’s one step closer to my goals. I’m excited about the grind.
Had a great afternoon training concepts with I feel honored and privileged to be able to work on defensive tactics with high quality instructors from . These guys are so detail-oriented. My mind is opened and hungry for more. The journey has just begun 🔥🔥🔥
Improvised Weapons (Weapons of Opportunity)
Some of my students asked me to make videos about Improvised Weapons so they could review what I showed them in class. My favorite Improvised Weapons are Short Impact Weapons that you can carry anywhere: a pen, a flashlight…. I can’t take the plane with a knife, but I’ve taken the plane multiple times with a “tactical” pen and a “tactical” flashlight. It’s just good to know how to use these seemingly harmless tools in a self-defense situation. But carrying a Short Impact Weapons will never replace training. It’s just a good equalizer to have. Even though I already posted videos about this, I’ll make a short technical videos series about the topic. This is video 3/3.
In this third video, we use the Short Impact Weapon (a pen again here) to defend against a low thrust knife attack (which is one of the most common knife attacks). In real life it would happen much faster and it would be a lot messier, but we do it slowly here, in a controlled manner, so people can understand the technique. As with the previous technique in the previous video, if you didn’t train properly how to defend against a knife empty handed, the pen will be of no use. Learn the proper way to defend yourself with a professional. A Short Impact Weapon is not a panacea.

In this second video, we clearly see how the pen facilitates the hammer-lock control. I first show the technique empty hand, then with an equalizer: the pen. But once again, if you one didn’t properly train how to do an empty hand hammer-lock first, the short impact weapon is useless.

In this first video, I show a basic guard you could adopt to defend against an empty hand attack. Notice how there’s always one of my elbows in front of my jaw as a protection. Notice as well how defenses become attacks.
