When a dog freezes, turns away, walks off, avoids interaction, or performs a shake-off, they are communicating that they need a break, more space, or that the game is over. In Social Cognitive Animal Training (S**T), communication is part of the learning process. Dogs are constantly exchanging information with one another, and our role is not to interrupt every interaction; it's to listen. When both dogs are communicating and responding appropriately, the conversation can continue, but when one dog is no longer being heard, that's when we step in. This process, known as social referencing, helps them determine whether a situation is safe, dangerous, exciting, or irrelevant. Our emotional state becomes part of their learning environment. In S**T, we don't simply ask, "Can the dog do the behaviour?" We question, "What emotional state is supporting that behaviour?" A regulated dog is more capable of: ✓ Making thoughtful choices ✓ Processing new information ✓ Recovering from stress ✓ Exploring the environment with confidence ✓ Building secure attachment with their human Training isn't just teaching dogs what to do.
