The most damaging thing Cesar Millan popularized wasn’t one training technique. It was an entire worldview that taught people to see their dogs as opponents. This mindset has damaged the human-animal bond, subjected dogs to unnecessary punishment, and undoubtedly contributed to dogs being relinquished or euthanized because their distress was mistaken for defiance. Many guardians feel ashamed when they learn they were harder on their dogs than they needed to be. But that shame doesn’t belong to them. It belongs to the industry that taught people to mistrust their dogs when they were only trying to do the right thing with the information they were given.
