Being a Haitian woman, black, and having been raised in Haiti, my early life was immersed in a celebration of my black identity.
Back then, the importance of explicitly recognizing “black history” took time to resonate with me because my existence felt inherently tied to celebrating my roots daily.
However, as circumstances led me to become an immigrant in North America and navigate the complexities of raising a black son distant from his Haitian origins, the deeper layers of significance unfolded.

Now, I understand that embracing “black history” extends beyond personal celebration; it encapsulates acknowledging our cultural heritage, triumphs, and struggles.
Living in North America has unveiled the need to comprehend our position globally and the ongoing fight for equality. It’s a dual journey of celebrating our rich cultural tapestry and actively advocating for a more inclusive and equitable world for ourselves and future generations.

To my fellow black brothers and sisters, may our journey be adorned with resilience, pride, and continued cultural vibrancy. Let our shared history inspire us to achieve new heights, fostering unity and empowerment.

To the non-black community, let us stand together in understanding and solidarity. Recognizing and respecting our differences is a path toward genuine inclusivity. May our shared efforts create a world where diversity is not only acknowledged but celebrated, fostering a tapestry of unity where equality knows no bounds.
