Pitching a tarp! We have steady rain (at times heavy) here today so thought I’d practice pitching a tarp in preparation for an upcoming trip. Maybe slightly easier to pitch on my pergola stand and under partial cover of the big chestnut… here goes!
Using a ridge line of paracord with prussik loops attached and basic tarp in a snake skin.
- 1 minute to deploy the ridge line (RL)
- 1.5 minutes to connect the tarp to RL using wooden toggles, unfurl and drape tarp over the RL (at this point, one could place their pack under the tarp and out of the rain)
- 2.5 minutes to unravel the guylines and stake out the 4 corners
Total time 5 minutes - could shave time off if using my other RL with hardware (no need for toggles or knots)

Practicing the pitch of my Lanshan 2 tent for an upcoming outing. I’ll be at an unfamiliar campground and unsure if the booked site will be friendly to my hammock setup. It’s a great tent - easy to pitch and take down; double walled & double doors, & lightweight (2.6 lb total plus your trekking poles). It is also very spacious with 220 x 110 cm floor space, amble headroom & easily fits 2 sleeping pads. And it's economical at less than $200 compared to other ultralight tents on the market. Despite all of these attributes, I can't see a permanent shift from my comfy-cozy hammock setup back to ground dwelling LOL
I haven’t spent a night in a tent since 2019 when I started hammock camping. The tent will be a backup plan if I can’t find two suitable trees to hang my hammock. I may consider putting the tent into action someday on a beach or meadow where hammock camping is out of the question.

Do you trust your gear to perform well in unwanted weather conditions? I left my hammock and tarp pitched for several days in my backyard in case I wanted an impromptu hang.
Well, last night and this morning we received 30 mm (1.25 inches) of rain. This photo shows the distinct hexagonal dry patch under my setup and the hammock itself is totally dry. I also have a 4-season tarp with doors on each end but it’s good to know my traditional tarp will keep me dry in the field through several hours of heavy rain and wind.

A short section of the steep ascent out of Wolfe River gorge towards Marven Lake and Point Wolfe. Lots of breaks needed on climbs like this. Hard to appreciate the elevation change but I know my heart rate was near 150 bpm when I ended the video to take a breather before continuing to the summit.

Hikers need fuel for the trail! My hiking partner and I enjoyed hot breakfast and dinner in camp each day. She supplied the snacks such as dried figs, tamari almonds, pita chips, bread, hummus, avocado dip & several cheeses. A welcome change from the usual dehydrated food we usually bring when backpacking over a couple of days.

Day hiked most of the Fundy Circuit this week with a good friend. We hammock camped in front country and juggled vehicles for daily sections of trail. This series of trails are a gem! They present a range of technical difficulty and take the hiker thru forests, river valleys and coastal areas of the Fundy Biosphere.
Nice change from backpacking to have hot showers and fresh clothes each day!
