Your waistline is not just about how your clothes fit.

It can be an important metabolic-health clue.

The scale only tells you total body weight. It does not tell you how much of that weight is fat, muscle, bone, or water.

This is why two women can weigh the same but have completely different body composition, strength, waist measurements, blood sugar control, and metabolic health.

After 40, this matters even more. Research shows the menopause transition is associated with changes in body composition, including gains in fat mass, losses in lean mass, and a shift toward more central and visceral fat storage.

Waist circumference helps estimate central abdominal fat. Waist-to-hip ratio can add another clue because it looks at fat distribution — how much is carried around the waist compared with the hips.

For women, a waist-to-hip ratio above 0.85 is commonly used as a higher-risk marker, but it should always be interpreted with the full picture: waist circumference, blood pressure, A1C/glucose, fasting insulin, triglycerides, HDL, symptoms, lifestyle, and medical history.

Waist gain is not a moral failure. It is feedback.

It may be telling you that your body needs more support with blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, strength training, protein, fibre, sleep, stress, daily movement, alcohol intake, or recovery.

The goal is not just to weigh less. The goal is to build a stronger, healthier, more metabolically resilient body.

I work with women over 40 through personal training, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching to support strength, energy, body composition, and metabolic health.

Insulin resistance does not always show up on bloodwork right away.

In the early stages, your blood sugar and A1C can still look “normal” because your pancreas may be producing more insulin to keep glucose in range. That means insulin can be working overtime before glucose markers start to rise.

This is why fasting insulin and HOMA-IR can be helpful conversations to have with your doctor, especially if you have symptoms or risk factors.

Some signs worth paying attention to:

• afternoon energy crashes
• sugar or carb cravings
• feeling hungry soon after meals
• stubborn waist gain
• brain fog
• low energy
• poor sleep
• skin tags or darker, velvety skin patches around the neck or underarms

These signs do not diagnose insulin resistance. But if several sound familiar, they may be clues that your blood sugar and insulin need more support.

The first place to start:

- protein at meals and more fibre
- strength training 2 - 3x per week
- walking after meals
- Improve sleep quality
- Implement stress management strategies
- fewer “naked carbs”

This is not about fear. It is about catching patterns early, when there is still so much you can do.

Save this and ask your doctor whether fasting insulin or HOMA-IR makes sense for you.
