When Do Small Businesses Get To Feel Safe?
I’ve debated whether to share this, but I feel like it’s time to speak openly about something that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore in our business community: the growing concerns surrounding homelessness, addiction, property crime, and the safety of those of us who operate small businesses.
On Friday, my neighbouring business was broken into. The glass was smashed, people entered the business, and the entire incident was captured on my security cameras.
Watching it happen from my own business has been incredibly unsettling.
As a small business owner, I spend a great deal of time at my studio. I work alone at times. I open my doors to families, children, athletes and clients, and I have always wanted my studio to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
But lately, there is an increasing feeling of uncertainty and fear about what is happening around us.
This isn't about blaming people who are unhoused. It isn't about saying that every person struggling with addiction is dangerous. People experiencing homelessness and addiction need compassion, resources, treatment and support.
But compassion cannot mean ignoring the impact that crime, drug activity, vandalism and break-ins are having on the people who live and work here.
Small businesses shouldn't have to choose between being welcoming and feeling safe.
We shouldn't have to wonder whether leaving our doors unlocked will put our staff, clients or property at risk. We shouldn't have to watch security cameras after hours wondering what is happening outside. And we shouldn't have to accept property crime as simply “the way things are now.”
There has to be room for both compassion and accountability!!!
We need meaningful resources for addiction and homelessness, but we also need meaningful action when businesses and property owners are being victimized.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only business owner feeling this way.
I love my business. I love the people who walk through my doors. I love being part of this community.
But I also want to feel safe while doing it.
Our business community deserves to be heard, protected and supported too. If you are a local business owner who has experienced similar concerns, I would genuinely like to hear your perspective. Maybe it’s time we started having a bigger conversation about what our community needs—not just after another break-in happens, but before it happens.
