A sport with limitless potential
LETHBRIDGE, JULY 29, 2026 – Dragonboat Association of Southern Alberta (DASA) teams competed in the 2026 2nd CanAmerican Club Crew Championships hosted by Dragon Boat Canada in Montreal, QC on July 17-20, 2026. DASA’s Prairie High Performance (PHP) (Mixed & Women), Sr. D Women, and 24U teams participated in the Small Boat Crew 200M, 500M and 2K races.
DASA PHP Sr. C Women and DASA Sr. D Women made their way to the podium this year, both earning silver in their categories. As coaches Darwin Li (PHP) and Karen Johnson (24U, Sr D.) reiterate, DASA is “the little club that could!” The DASA Sr. D Women’s team is a new addition over this past year to the DASA line up and this new team of women have exemplified this motto. The Sr. D Women’s team consists of athletes that are over the age of 70! Age is only a number, not a limitation to participating in competitive sport. As the national competition will be coming out west in 2027, be sure to watch for this Sr. D team on the water!
Teams are continually pushing to increase their technique to get the best results on the water. Li states, “We’re already very fast, which means squeezing out those next fractions of a second gets harder from here. Closing the remaining gap won't happen overnight, but unlocking the next speed level is the exciting part of where we are in our development. As you climb the mountain of speed, there are fewer pathways at the top but when you find them, they are magic”. This work ethic, grit, passion and teamwork will create the fuel to succeed throughout the season.
DASA teams have competed in several festivals already this season, notably the Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival where DASA Fuelled Ladies, DraGOONIES and Nitro earned gold in their categories and DASA Prairie High Performance (women) and Coulee Cruisers earned silver in their categories. DASA teams are looking forward to competing in the upcoming Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival on Aug 8-9, 2026.
