Fresh off the bench. 😎
Sweet little three piece 8’0” 4wt.

Decided to “hot rod customize” my cane.

Figure the New Scotland Fly Rods decal gained me 0.005 mph, and the Brook Trout (Liz Bateman art) one probably another 0.001 mph.

Maybe it’s the meds talking, but feeling kinda speedy, might do a flame job later.😜

The shop boss making sure I’m not slacking and QC-ing my work.
She’s a stickler for detail and likes to make a bed out of the shavings when I'm planing strips!😜

Great day to spend some time at the bench working on a new rod; sanding glue ups and listening to Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 50!

I am excited to announce that a New Scotland Fly Rods handcrafted split bamboo rod has been donated to be auctioned off for Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada!

If you are not familiar with the Heres Mending on the Fly program, it is primarily focused on the health and well being of Active duty members, Veterans, and First Responders. The participants are taught how to tie flies, fly fish and eventually get on the water fly fishing! Both the physical, and mental benefits of fly fishing and tying are well documented.
The program is mostly funded by The Legion, generous donations from small businesses / individuals and auctions like this one.The instructors and facilitators are very knowledgable and dedicated volunteers.

The rod will be up for grabs at the Union of Guides & Outfitters of New Brunswick's annual Trade Show, Auction and Dance, 17 January at the Fredericton Inn, Fredericton, N.B. (details in link at bottom of post)

THE ROD:
- 8'0" 4 weight 3 piece rod, with spare tip. Very light in the hand, responsive, dry fly action. A SWEET little trout rod!
- Stabilized amboyna burl reel seat with cork insert and nickel silver up sliding band/hardware,
- Top flor cork grip,
- Very nice Highland Green silk thread wraps tipped black,
- Green agate stripping guide,
- High quality nickel silver ferrules,
- Nearly indestructible aluminum tube with brass fittings,
- Nova Scotia tartan rod bag and tube sock.
- Appx retail value $1500

Here's your chance to own a handcrafted split bamboo fly rod at a great price, with NO wait-time, all while supporting a great cause! 100% of the rod's sale will go to HMOTF.

Hope to see you there! Remember; bid often, bid high and good luck!!

What makes me truly happy, smiling ear to ear??

Well, pretty hard to beat a tip strip of bamboo, tapering from nnety-nine thousandths of an inch down to thirty-one thousanths of an inch over its’ 50” length….with perfect 60 degree angles on all three sides! 😃

Now, just have to do it eleven more times…..exactly like that.

“Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the bamboo shavings inside are so de-light-ful!
So let it snow, let it snow”….😜

One of my favourite steps in the process, rough tapering the strips. At this point, the bamboo starts to take shape and resemble a fly rod more than a hexagonal stick.
