Did you know that we share many of our multi-use trails in Nova Scotia with horseback riders and their horses? As a cyclist, it’s especially important to approach a horse properly when you meet them on the trail so that it is a safe and positive interaction for everyone 🐴
So, what should cyclists do when meeting horses on the trail?
When you see a horse approaching, SLOW DOWN and move to the opposite side of the trail. Greet the rider in a friendly, relaxed tone. If the horse is frightened - the rider may ask you to stop/get off your bike. Horses are large, sometimes unpredictable animals - as such, they have the right of way on multi-use trails 🍃
When approaching a horse from behind, SLOW DOWN! Let the rider know you’re behind them before you get too close. Either by ringing your bell or calling out. Do not pass unless the rider has acknowledged you. Pass slowly, giving the horse as much room as possible - a frightened horse may kick or try to run away. If the horse is frightened they may ask you to dismount and walk your bicycle past or to stop so they can walk the horse past you.
We all have a part to play in creating safe and enjoyable trail environments for all! Let’s work together to better understand our fellow trail users so that we can all have fun out on the trails 🌲

Check it out. Great way to start mountain biking.
We have another wonderful program that came out of our Activating Champions initiative, Hello Singletrack - Women's Mountain Bike Intro Session! This session is designed for women aged 18+ who are new to mountain biking or looking to build confidence in their fundamental skills.
Led in small groups of up to six participants, these two-hour sessions combine flat-ground skill development with introductory singletrack trail riding on local Kentville trails.
Participants will learn and practice foundational mountain bike skills, while progressing at their own pace in a supportive and welcoming environment.
The goal is to help women develop the confidence, skills, and community connections needed to safely enjoy local trails and continue exploring the sport. Participants should be comfortable riding a bicycle and have a mountain bike in good working order and a helmet.
Register now at kentville.ca/programs. Limited spots, so don't sleep on this great opportunity!

Thanks to everyone that donated and helped to fund the AVMBA's newest trail, it's not too late to toss in some funds.
The trail will open ASAP but is very soft, as in unrideable soup after that downpour. It is very important that you follow the Ride Dirt Not Mud philosophy(applies to all trails) We will let you as soon as it is good to go.
This is a climb only trail to access Scoliosis, Gateway and Holy Roller. No descending on the new trail.
