Name: Emelia Maring
Position: Skip

Emelia is a dedicated 13-year-old curler from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, and an emerging young athlete in the sport. After beginning competitive curling last year with Team Wainman, she quickly found success, posting a strong 15-5 win record and earning a gold medal at the 2026 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse. As she takes the next step in her development, Emelia has formed her own team and will step into the role of skip, showcasing her leadership and commitment to continued growth in curling.

It begins Saturday night at the Cloverdale Curling Club 🥌🥌🥌

The team was officially announced about a year ago, but the groundwork began roughly three weeks earlier. Reese and Brooke had just returned from U18 Nationals and were interested in forming a team to try and qualify for the 2026 Arctic Winter Games.

The challenge was that there were no athletes their age available to form a team with, which meant they would need to play with curlers aged 12–14. Hayden was an easy choice, being Brooke’s younger sister. I believe Brooke joked that she would drag Hayden to practice every night if she had to. Hayden had been attending junior curling once a week for three years and already had a good foundation.

The final athlete was a more difficult decision. Realistically, there were four or five athletes we could have asked. I still remember the reaction when I suggested to Reese and Brooke that we consider Emelia. Emelia was only 12 years old and had curled maybe ten times in her life. However, I had watched her play hockey and knew she was a hard worker with a bit of feistiness — qualities that translate well to curling. It took some convincing, but eventually Reese and Brooke came around.

Credit goes to Emelia and Hayden for the incredible work they put in. They committed to practicing three times a week, with 45-minute sessions focused simply on sliding and sweeping.

Looking back now at the team’s success, it still feels remarkable. They played 20 competitive games and won 15 of them, including victories against some of the top U18 teams in the country.

How was that possible?

Reese and Brooke stepped up in a big way. They became mentors to the younger athletes, helping guide them both on and off the ice. There were no expectations placed on the team — they simply worked hard, supported each other, and had fun.

And sometimes, that’s when the best results happen.
